There was nothing you love more than your job. As a caregiver for the elderly, it was hit and miss to whether you would have a client you enjoyed spending time with. But Mr Kent was a joy to work with. And it didn't hurt that his son became your friend too.

You and Josh clicked straight away. You made easy conversation and had similar interests. You had gotten to know each other since you started working with Mr Kent and he was easily a friend. That's all. A friend.

You were making tea for the three of you when there was a knock on the door. "I'll get it" Josh said, standing up.

You continued pouring the hot water into the mugs, until you heard a familiar voice. "I'm here to see Y/N. I wanted to surprise her" Matt, your boyfriend was here.

You put the kettle down and followed the sound of his voice. "Matt?" You smiled when you saw him, with flowers in his hand. "Matt, you didn't have to do this"

"You've been working hard lately and I wanted to do something nice" you could hear the smile in his voice as he hugged you. After a minute, he pulled away and turned to face Josh. "Hey, I'm Matt. Nice to meet you"

"Josh, nice to meet you" despite their fake smiles, you knew they weren't going to be friends.

You led Matt into the living room where Mr Kent was reading his newspaper. Unlike Josh, Matt hit it off with him and began making conversation as soon as they introduced themselves.

You made your way into the kitchen, grabbing an extra cup for Matt. "I'll help you" Josh said, following you into the kitchen.

He opened the fridge door and handed you the milk. "So I was thinking, maybe we could go see a movie next week or so? It's been awhile"

You looked at him as you poured the milk. "Yeah. Matt's going to be away for a few weeks so I'll be free most of the time" you handed Josh the cups to take to the living room. "As long as you don't cry again"

"That was one time and it was your fault"

"Well next time I won't be the one drying your tears" you rolled your eyes and noticed Matt's jaw clenched as you laughed. "Here you go" you said, handing Matt the cup.

For the next few minutes, you all made casual conversation. It didn't escape your attention that when Josh spoke, Matt's expression would harden.

"Well, I'm beat. Can you help me get into bed, Y/N? I think I'll have a nap" Mr Kent said with a smile.

"Of course" you said, standing up.

"Nice to meet you, Matt. She's a keeper, I'm telling you" He smiled at Matt as you helped him stand.

"Trust me, I won't let her go" Matt stared at Josh as he spoke.

You couldn't believe he was acting this way. Matt had never been like this before. The last thing you wanted to do was leave him alone with Josh, but you knew you had to help Mr Kent to bed.

When he was in bed, you closed his bedroom door behind you and was met by Josh standing in the hallway. "You can go now, I have the day off so I can help him with dinner and bed" he spoke softly. "Plus, I think you and Matt should talk"

"Thanks Josh. I'm sorry about how he's behaving. I promise he isn't like this"

"Don't worry about it. I can tell from how he was with my Dad, he's a nice guy. I'm sure you'll fix this" he smiled and pulled you in for a hug. A moment later, you heard Matt clear his throat.

"We better get going"

You followed as Matt turned and walked out the door, without saying goodbye. You sighed and faced Matt as he drove, staring straight ahead. "What was that about?"

Matt scoffed and rolled his eyes, but said nothing.

"Matt, you better have a good reason to why you treated Josh like that. I consider him a friend, so you better start explaining yourself"

"Please, I think you consider him more than a friend" Matt shook his head, not looking at you.

"Are you kidding me, Matt? We're just friends" you said, not believing that's really what he thought.

"Please, Y/N. Friends don't flirt like that"

"That wasn't flirting! We're close friends, that's all" you were beginning to become defensive, slowly realising he believed what he was saying.

"You might even like him better" Matt hissed. You looked at him in shock as he parked outside your apartment and he turned to look at you. "If you're just going to replace me with him when I go away, you might as well use him as a full time replacement"

"Matt, do you hear yourself?" How can he accuse you like that? Matt wasn't just your boyfriend, he was your best friend. "I wouldn't try replace you! I don't understand where this is coming from"

"I saw you two today. I know what I'm talking about" Matt rolled his eyes.

"No you don't!" You yelled in frustration, wiping your eyes to prevent your tears from falling. Matt shook his head and got out of the car, slamming the door behind him

You sat in the car in silence, wanting to be hot on Matt's heels as he walked into the apartment, but you knew he needed to calm down. If you went in, it would make the situation worse.

A few minutes later, you freaked the apartment door open to be met with silence. "Matt?" You called out. Silence.

You tried to stop the doubtful thoughts that were going into your mind. Surely he wouldn't leave you over something like this. You cursed yourself for leaving him to cool down instead of following him.

You stopped outside your bedroom door. Your anger was forgotten  when you saw him laying on the bed. "Matt"

Matt looked up from the pillow and your need to be harsh crumbled. You knew you had a good reason to be mad at him and this didn't excuse his behaviour, but your priority was making sure the man you loved was okay.

"Matt" he shoved his face back into the pillow. You went straight to him and wrapped your arms around him from behind. "What's going on?"

"You're better off with a guy like him" he whispered, sitting up to face you as he spoke. "You're better off with someone who'll always be around. I got mad today because I saw Josh and I saw that he could do everything for you and I can't"

"Matt, that's bullshit. Yeah, it'll be hard when your away, but no one compares to you. You're who I want to be with. This is what I signed up for when I started dating you and nothing will make me go back on that" you smiled at him and when he smiled back, you knew it was going to be okay.
