What a terrible lie.
What a coldhearted lie Matt should get himself out of before it's too late, but you didn't give him the chance to. Now he asked, you looked like you'd been waiting for that question all your life and he couldn't bring himself up upset you by telling the truth.
Your eyes were bright, brighter than he'd ever seen. Your smile seemed so genuine and real, like this meant everything to you. And he didn't want to take that away.
He really doesn't. But he knows he should.
He was destroying your friendship by not telling the truth, but how could he say it when he could already see the devastated look on your face.
He wouldn't have asked at all if he knew you had feelings for him because you were the last person he'd ever want to hurt, but he didn't know you liked him until he asked the question.
"You're asking me out?" You asked, smiling, looking down at the mug in your hands.
You and Matt had been best friends for four years and you had been waiting for this moment for three years. You were shocked because you had ever reason to believe he didn't like you in that way.
He gave your life new meaning and redefined parts of yourself that you kept hidden. He made you fall in love with the wild, fearless parts of yourself. You danced with no music and sang all the wrong lyrics, but only when you were with him.
He was in all the highlights of your life. Like the road trip you took in freshman year. It was your first time you'd ever felt adventurous. Or the time he convinced you to sing karaoke with him at a party.
As time went on, the memories kept growing. You fell harder and harder for him.
Your heart was his. Forever.
"Do you know how long I've been waiting for you to ask me that?"
To you, it was an innocent question. But to him, it was one he never wished he heard. It'll only hurt you more than he could ever imagine, but he couldn't tell you.
If he tells you the only reason he asked you to come with him to L.A was to make Annie fall in love with him, he'd shatter you and your hopes and dreams.
Matt couldn't help feeling hope that you being oblivious to the plan would get him closer to Annie.
She was everything he dreamed of. She was beautiful and had a heart of gold. She played pianos and played video games for fun. She was a painter and knew a lot about music.
Any time Matt asked her out, she'd always tell him that she wanted to, but she wanted to focus on her growth and time alone.
It had been two years and Matt was sick of waiting for her to give in. He couldn't dream of her being with anyone else and it was killing him.
So when the L.A trip was approaching, Matt knew it was the perfect way to win her over.
It was the only way.
If Annie saw him with someone else, she'd crack. He knew it because he seen it.
He needed to ask you to go with him because you were the only person he wouldn't mind touching because you've done it all before. Friendly of course, but it's happened either way.
It would have been fine, if you didn't know that his guest had to be a date, or knew that it was for him to get closer to someone else.
But how could he tell you now, when you had the biggest smile on your face.
You noticed Matt hadn't said anything yet and he was just sitting there.
"Are you okay? Did I say something wrong?"
