Matt always thought going on a stage would be the most nerve wracking thing he'd ever do in his life. He never thought asking your hand in marriage would be up there with it. Your Dad had a soft spot for Matt, so he knew he had nothing to worry about. But, he might not want his daughter pinned all over the internet.
Your Dad knew that though. He knew the consequences of being with Matt was having your face everywhere so people knew who you were. Your Mom and Dad understood that, and they know Matt loved what he did. They adored Matt and he kept telling himself he had nothing to worry about.

"Matt, my parents invited us for lunch today. It's your chance to meet them! What do you say? Can we go?" You begged, as he turned to walk out of the kitchen. His eyes were full of sleep as he walked to the couch and sat down beside you. He kicked his feet up and set them in your lap.
"Do you want me to meet them? I mean, you've met mine. It's only right to meet yours" he smiled, taking a sip of his drink. He watched as you typed on your phone, replying to your Mom's text. "What time? I feel this isn't a good Sunday lunch outfit..." he laughed and you rested your hand on his stomach.
"You could wear anything, and they'd still love you, Matt. I've not even taken you to meet them, and they already love you" you laughed, resting your cheek against his bent knee. "It's just the local bar. We used to go their for family tradition every Sunday. But it stopped" you sighed and looked at Matt. "What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing. Just, imagine a family tradition we could have. Like, we could go for dinner close to home and meet your parents, my parents, and after we'd eaten, we can go for a walk in the park" He smiled as your rubbed his leg.
"You think about that?" You asked and he nodded. "You're so cute, you know that? We've been together for seven months and you already think of a future with me?" You smiled as his face went red. He knew it was early, but he knew you were the one he wanted all of that with. You were the one he wanted to marry, the one he wanted to have his children.
"Sometimes I do. When I miss you on tour and you're asleep back here. I don't know...it comes to mind" he laughed and set his drink on the coaster on the table. "But..shouldn't you be getting ready? Make yourself all pretty. We have to dress formal if I'm meeting your parents, right?" He winked and you slapped his thigh softly.
"I hate you.." you mumbled, pushing his feet off your lap and going upstairs to the bedroom. All you needed was your parents approval and things would get better.
~
The gravel crunched under his boots, as you made your way to the entrance of the bar your parents were sat in. His hand was moist as he held yours, looking down. You knew that look. He was nervous.
"Hey..don't be scared, okay? I told them so much about you and they really want to meet you. I promise, they won't hate you" you smiled, and leaned up to kiss his cheek. "You look good" you smiled, as you approached the door.
"Okay...I'm nervous. Can we do this another day? I feel like I'm going to puke" he whispered and you watched his face drop. "I'm not ready. I don't have anything to give them as a gift. I should've brought her flowers or something-" you cut him off with a kiss. He was cute, but he was working himself up.
"You'll be fine, Matt. Please stop worrying. You'll give yourself a panic attack and I don't know what to do during a panic attack, so I'd leave you here and that isn't a good idea" you teased as he nudged you with his elbow. "Ready?"
Matt gulped and nodded, following behind you as you walked into the bar. The chatter and smell made you feel right at home.
"Y/N! We're over here. Honey, we're here!" You heard your Mom call, as she shuffled from her seat and jogged over to you both. "We missed you" she smiled, wrapping you in a hug. Her eyes cast up to Matt, who was watching you both. "And you must be Matt! You're much taller than Y/N described" she laughed and hugged him. "And he's a good hugger"
"Thank you so much..it's a pleasure to meet you. I would've brought flowers but it was late notice and Y/N was excited to get here and see you" Matt smiled, following your Mom to the table, where you were already sat talking to your Dad. "Hello, sir. It's nice to meet you too. Thank you both for inviting me"
"You're dating our daughter Matt, you can call us by our first names, okay?" Your Dad smiled as Matt sat into the booth. "It's Y/M/N and Y/F/N. You understand, Matt?" He smiled, looking at you beside Matt. You took Matt's hand in yours and squeezed it.
~
His knuckles knocked on the door, his legs were wobbling and his hands were shaking as he looked to his feet. He never felt so nervous. He could hear the footsteps behind the door, before your Mom pulled it open.
"Oh, hello, Matt. Are you here on your own? Did something happen?" Your Mom looked around to see if you were stood at the car. But you weren't. "Where's Y/N?" She asked, letting Matt into the house.
"I'm here alone. I want to talk to you both about something. Something I've been thinking about for a while and..I need to ask right away, okay?" Matt trembled at the sound of the door closing. "Is Y/F/N around? It's sort of to ask him"
"He's in the living room. Are you okay, Matt? You're shaking" your Mom wondered, as Matt smiled at her. Matt placed his arm over her shoulder and gave her a hug. "Just a hug. That's okay" she smiled. "Go sit in the living room. I'll bring tea and cakes. You like the chocolate muffins, right?"
"You remembered!" He smiled, kissing her cheek. "Thank you so much" he smiled, kicking off his shoes, before he walked into the living room. "Hi, Y/FN, how are you? Are they the flowers we got you for your anniversary?" Matt asked, taking a seat on the couch.
Matt always had a connection with your Dad and it's only ever when you're popping over for tea and cakes that you see them in the garden together. It made you smile, that your Dad accepted him right away. It was unlikely for that to happen, and Matt felt great.
"I think so. They came out good, didn't they? Y/M/N loves them" your dad laughed, patting Matt's knee. "How are you? Where's Y/N? Is she here with you?" He asked and Matt shook his head. "You guys didn't break up, right? I'd have to ask you to get back with her, you make her very happy"
"No! We're still together. She wanted to come, but she's not feeling well. She has the flu and she's asleep but my brother, Nick is looking after her. I just had to come over and ask you something. I was hoping now was the right time..." Matt asked, hearing the clink of a spoon from the kitchen. "It's a very important question and I need to get the answer to calm me down"
"What's the question then?" He asked and Matt ran his fingers through his hair. "What's bothering you?" Matt saw your Mom
the room from the corner of his eye.
"I wanted to know if I had your blessing to marry your daughter? I feel like I should ask you before I ask her...if you weren't happy with it, it would make me feel worse" Matt whispered and your mom gasped, but your Dad laughed.
"Matt! That's amazing! How long have you been thinking about this?" Your Mom asked, looking at Matt. "Oh my God...honey, they're getting married! That's so great!" She squealed, hugging Matt.
"Matt, you've always had our blessing. You're the only guy we love around Y/N and you've proved to us that you really love her. So yes, you can marry her. Just treat her well, okay? She's my little girl" your dad stood up and held out his hand for Matt, which Matt took. He stood up with your Dad and shook his hand, pulling him in for a hug.
"Thank you. You know I'd always put her first. She'll be my first priority for as long as possible. You don't know how relieved I am for an answer" Matt laughed, pulling away from your Dad and smiling.
