"Matt, I'm okay, I promise"
Matt clicked his tongue, throwing the extra blanket over your legs. "Are you sure you don't need another pillow? I can get one"
You were comfortable against the two he already gave you , but Matt was running around like a headless chicken. You were worried he still hasn't digested his dinner.
"What about water? Did you eat enough? I think we still have those pies Mom made us"
You smiled, holding your small baby closer. "I'm okay, I promise. I want you to come here and cuddle with us"
Matt stood at the end of the bed with his hands on his hips. "Can I rub your feet? Are they still bothering you?"
"Later, come here to your girls for now"
Matt had the biggest smile on his face. His girls. His baby was finally home, right where he needed her. Cuddled on your chest for a meal.
"You're feeding our baby" he protested. "I want you to be comfortable"
"I'm warm, properly supported, hydrated, full of takeout and I've turned into a cow, so please stop fussing and come here?"
Matt climbed up his side of the bed and settled. Madison paused in her feeding just long enough to show she heard him groaning as he got comfortable with a full stomach while hers was getting filled.
"I can't believe how small she is" he whispered, as he rolled on to his side and propped himself up on his elbow, gazing at her. It was how you were looking at her that got to him. It was like she was all you could see in that moment.
"That's because she wasn't supposed to be born for five more weeks, and ten altogether" you drew in a shaky breath, not wanting to cry again. She was home now, she was healthy. She made all the noises she could, she had ten fingers and ten toes. She was perfect. "I was supposed to keep her safe and I couldn't"
"Babe" Matt whispered, dropping his chin on your shoulder. "She's doing great, you know that" he pressed his lips against your shoulder. "I thought we were past this. The nurses were really happy at the weight she was gaining and it's nice to have her home, right?"
"Yeah" you agreed, kissing her small head.
"If they didn't think she was ready, they'd of made her stay longer"
You nodded. "I know. I'm just...scared. It's our first night with her at home"
"I'm scared too" Matt said, smushing his cheek against your shoulder. He was terrified. He found himself counting her breaths when he held her. It was just the two of you now. No nurses or doctors or machines to make sure she was okay and breathing. Having a healthy baby and being a first time parent was hard, but having a baby who sometimes forgot how to breath, always had him ready for the worst. "But..." he started. "We have the breathing and heart rate monitors for her. It's okay, we have everything we need"
"I'm glad she's home"
"Yeah" Matt smirked. "We can finally use the stuff I built"
You rolled your eyes. "She does love the baby swing"
"She should. It took two hours to put together" Matt teased, bumping your shoulder with his nose. "Now she's getting her McDonald's in"
You laughed. "Are you having McDonald's?" You watched her blink slowly. "Thanks for getting dinner" you reached over and ran your hand through his hair because bending over to kiss him would result in a squished baby, and she's too cute for that.
"You're welcome. I'm glad she's enjoying it too"
"She's been eating for an hour now. She's so, so hungry" you bent over and kissed her little cheek
