AHSOKA TANO

Ahsoka sat in her room, meditating. It was remarkable how many memories were attached to these cruisers – even one that she had never been on before, such as this one. She could almost see the first time she had been in command of a Republic warship, when she had been forced to evacuate and order a retreat.

But, her concentration was broken by the beginnings of another wave of cramps. She tried to grit her teeth and bear with it, but that course of action was proving futile. Her breathing sped up as she tried to will it to go away, but that didn't work either.

She flopped down onto the bed from her cross-legged meditation position, doing some quick calculations in her head. If one were to say that she would give birth to her baby in exactly nine months, then that would be...

"Oh no," she whispered. "Two days. I'm due in two days."

She grabbed her comlink of the table, selecting the frequency she wanted. "Amni... Amni, please pick up," she pleaded in a whisper.

After a moment that felt like a year, there was a response. "Ahsoka, are you all right? What's going on?"

"Amni, I need help... It's never hurt this bad before, I..."

"I'll be right there." Amni's comlink signal cut off, but Ahsoka could regardless feel the tiniest bit of relief. The young Jedi Healer was an experienced doctor – and even though she was probably the first pregnant woman Amni had dealt with, she was handling it beautifully. She could help her.

After a few minutes, in which several attempts to soothe the pains were made and failed, the door slid open. She must have forgotten to lock it, but Amni spared her the difficulty before walking inside.

"All right, Master, what's troubling you?" she asked in her usual calm tone, sitting down beside her on the bed and turning on a datapad.

"It... It hurts, and I'm... two days away. Two days, Amni," she said, curling into a ball around her stomach.

"Not necessarily." Amni brought a small scanner carefully to the side of Ahsoka's face, taking some sort of reading. "The average Togruta gestation period is nine and a half to ten months. You were only considering the average human cycle. You might have another two weeks, in the very least."

She breathed a sigh of relief, despite the pain. She was all right. She still had time to tell Lux the truth before the situation unfolded in the least favorable way – the actual birth. But she wasn't sure if when the time came, she would have the guts to actually say anything to him...

"It will all turn out okay, Ahsoka," Amni said, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. "You're a pregnant Togruta woman in a difficult political situation. It's amazing you can deal with it as well as you do."

"I guess..." She trailed off, thinking about Lux. His sweet, smiling face and the way he always looked at her when he told her he was so in love with her... She couldn't lose that. She wouldn't.

"Can you give me something for the pain?" Ahsoka asked suddenly. "It's dying down now, but earlier it felt like my body was trying to kill me from the inside out."

"Yes, but you have to make sure you take the appropriate quantity each time. Otherwise it could be dangerous for both you and the baby." She handed her a small container filled with shiny white berries. Ahsoka raised her white eyebrows. She knew what species they were!

"Fornroot?"

Amni nodded. "It helps with sleep and with contractions, especially in pregnant women. Aya'ha found it. It's a weed that she told me that grows in the old garden. With its lack of upkeep, the plants had taken over." She glanced at her wrist chrono, and looked back up at Ahsoka. "I have to get going. I have another patient to attend to. But call me if anything happens, all right?"

"Yeah. Thanks, Amni."

When she was certain that the Jedi Healer was gone, she jumped up and ran from the room, pulling her loose vest on top of her snowsuit. It was the extra assurance that no one noticed her baby bump, despite the dietary precautions she had taken.

After a few minutes of running down hallways, she arrived at her destination: hangar bay seven. She walked inside, and spotted two figures talking. But, sadly, their voices were too low for her to catch anything, and besides – they noticed her the same time she noticed them.

As they crossed a pool of light provided by an overhanging fixture, she recognized one of the silhouettes as Lux, but she couldn't identify the other one. The newcomer drew a hood over their head, then left without a sound.

Lux, meanwhile, walked over to her. Based on his body language, he was still a little frustrated with her, but not angry enough to cut off communication. "What–"

"I need to talk to you. Now," she said breathlessly. "Before I lose my guts again and go back to hiding what's really going on."

"But it can't be more important than what I just–" he began to say, but the suddenly wailing of alarms cut him off.

They both knew that that meant. Without a word or even exchanging a glance, they ran through the door and sprinted back to the main control center.

*Ahsoka has made her decision to tell Lux what is really going on... But will it be too late? What new perils could the alarms try to warn our heroes of?And what else did Enarion Jarrus Dume, publicly known as Watcher, tell Lux about his past? And what is the matter with Anakin?
