His name comes across my phone for the first time in weeks.
"Hello?" I question as I pick up the phone.
"Hey," my brother's voice floats through the speaker. "What are you doing tonight?" He asks casually, as if there was no time lost between us.
"Brynn and I were going to hang out, why?"
"I'm with Tristan right now and he's asking if you're free, he wants to race you."
I never told Jake or Tristian about my new car, I passed them in town the other day. I guess I've been a topic of conversation for them - that's weird to think about.
"He knows my car is bone stock right? I'm still paying it off."
"Yeah, with his mods you guys should be putting out around the same horsepower. It will be a good race, just trust us."
"Okay." With that being said, the configurations started.
Since my dad and I had our falling out, it was as if sides were taken. I moved into my moms house full time, and my brother moved into my dads house full time.
Jake and I had never been close, but it's weird not knowing what's going on in his or my dads life anymore.
Unlike me, Jake has never been one to dwell on a situation, I guess that's why it was so easy for him to reach out. It's almost as we picked up right where we left off. Things are the same yet so different.
Tristian and I spent all afternoon planning out where we'd meet, what time we'd meet at, what highway we'd run on, and where our end point was.
From then, it was decided that Tristan's friend with a 360 cam would join us so he could film the races.
It's now 8:00pm and I am on my way to pick up my best friend Brynn.
We squeal with anticipation and excitement as she slides into the passenger seat of my car. "Sooo how are you feeling?" She questions me as she shuts the door.
"I'm so tweaked out of my mind over this. I can't believe I'm finally getting to race someone, dreams do come true!" I say in an intentionally cringe way.
She rolls her eyes and laughs at me.
We pull up to our local CVS at 8:45pm. Tristan is already there so we park next to him. He and my brother Jake get out, so Brynn and I do the same.
"Where's your friend?" I direct my question toward Tristan.
"He grabbed Dean, they said they're on the way less than ten minutes ago."
As if on que, a blacked out Ford Focus ST rips through the parking lot. You can hear the blow off valve hiss as he obnoxiously bangs through the lower gears making as much noise to let us know he's here.
He whips around to the other side of Tristan's car and throws it in park. I look over my shoulder at Brynn and give her a look that says "this will be an interesting night." She raises her eyebrows in a sense of agreement.
Dean and this mystery boy get out and join our conversation.
"Kiersten." Dean - one of my brothers best friends - greets me with a head nod.
"Dean." I give him a half-assed salute.
"Brynn! Did you know Jaxon and Isla broke up!"
"Yes Dean, I did, I'm pretty sure everyone knows."
Jaxon is Brynn's long-term ex. Toxic ex I might add. Anyone who's been around them knows they're never fully done with each other. As Brynn's best friend, I hope this time is different.
