. CHAPTER FIVE
🖤🖤🖤

elaine knew it was dumb.

she knew that matt was already mad at her for the fight in school today, being over at his house and now for knocking on his door.

elaine felt her fingers grazing each other nervously as she felt the sweat starting to form from her hand palms.

the door swung open with force, blowing slight wind into her as she felt her hair going upwards from laying on her shoulders. she saw the way matt's face was already annoyed and she didn't miss the way it completely fell when his eyes fell onto the presence standing in front of the door.

"what?" matt bluntly asks, clearly not having any energy left to talk to elaine.

elaine went over her words inside her head, not believing she's actually about to do that but there was no backing down now, "i'm sorry."

it seemed to take the brunette boy by surprise as his eyes couldn't help but widen at the pitiful words leaving her lips which where pulled into a frown.

"what?" matt repeated but this time his voice was fading midways as he didn't even know how to react.

"for the fight today, in school. i'm sorry. i shouldn't have been yelling at you when all you wanted was to make this work...for the school." elaine rambles out, feeling how her heart fell into her pants from how good it felt to say that out loud.

matt stood there, completely dumbfounded as he didn't fully comprehend the words that left his rivals mouth.

then he realized.

she's never apologized before.

none of them have ever been this kind to each other.

he couldn't let this kindness happen, he was afraid to let that happen.

"it's fine." matt only answers with annoyance before he went to shut the door again but elaine smashed her hand against it to hold it from closing.

"no need to give me that attitude." elaine scoffs as she harshly shoves the door back open which made matt roll his eyes as he stopped pushing against her hand.

"look...we have to work together for this competition. we both need that for college applications. don't even try to deny it. we just work this out, for the school and our future. and after that we're done, alright?"

matt glared holes into elaine's eyes, simply for the fact that she was absolutely right and he hated to admit it.

so, he didn't admit it.

"whatever you say, levine." matt sarcastically says before he swung his arm forward and watched as the door slammed shut in front of elaine's face.

a huff left her as elaine held back the tantrum she desperately wanted to throw in this very moment.

instead, she flipped the closed door off and mumbled curse words under her breath while she walked away from matt as far as possible.
