"who are the winners?"

"we are!"

giggles escaped elaine's throat as she looked around the table to see the whole team singing through the whole restaurant. in another situation, she would've shushed them and told them to calm down because of the amount of people looking at them, but she was way too drunk to care.

"i wanna raise a toast!" mr. carlson spoke up as he stood up from his seat which made the whole table go quiet to raise their glasses as well.

"to elaine!" he said with a smile towards the blonde girl who tried to hide her flushed cheeks when everyone started cheering and applauding for her.

"and to matt!"

the table got even louder and they all started chanting the two's names, who sat next to each other with wide grins as they looked around.

"our two best ones!" mr. carlson added while he sat down on the table.

elaine smiled brightly at that while she nudged matt's shoulder, but he had a frown on his face. that unfortunately went unnoticed by the blonde girl.

his mind was twirling with thoughts, our two best ones. his whole life he always wanted to hear those words. he realized all this hatred he had towards elaine was only because he needed to hear those words. and that made his mood fall because it wasn't even that important, those words weren't important enough to hate on her.

"matt!"

matt's focus got brought back onto the table when he made eye contact with one of the guy's in front of him.

"have a sip." he said while handing the glass filled with alcohol over towards matt's face.

"uh, no, thanks." matt says with a tight lipped smile as his right hand clings onto the glass filled with dr. pepper.

"come on!" another one said to encourage him but all matt did was frown even more.

"hey, come on, leave him guys." elaine spoke up as she waved her hand against the glass to push it away from matt.

"alright." he said with a simple shrug as he took the glass back towards him.

"no, i want to." matt suddenly spoke up with his hand reaching back over the table to grab the glass right out of the guy's hands, who seemed surprised at that. but not as surprised as elaine as her eyes widened with disbelief.

she went to take that out of matt's hand but he dodged her grip.

"matt, seriously. you don't have to." elaine reassured him with a gentle frown as she went to take it once again but he grabbed onto her hand and pulled it far away.

"it's fine."

with a frown, elaine watched as matt literally chugged the whole glass of alcohol down while everyone else cheered him on. she wasn't very fond of it, knowing that matt has been sober for his whole life. she knew that he felt pressured and that's only why he did it.

matt's face scrunched up in disgust as he slammed the glass onto the table while the boys interrupted in cheers, clapping his back and praising him like a dog.
