. CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN
🖤🖤🖤

"okay, listen."

elaine stood there with her arms crossed, rather unamused as she looked at her ex boyfriend, who now tried to tell her the whole truth. she hoped that he had a very good excuse because the way he left her, made question marks fill her mind every day. she had started to doubt that it was her that was the problem, that she wasn't good enough or something.

"first of all, i'm really sorry, like truly sorry with how i ended things. there was no reason for me to be this harsh to you." steve sighs out, giving her a pitiful look while he tried his very best to show her that he truly means it.

elaine nodded her head at that, showing him that she accepts the apology.

steve felt relieved at that, knowing he had her approval. and now came the truth.

"i broke up with you because you don't belong with me."

what?

she felt her eyebrows furrow at that, she expected definitely something else, rather than this. what did he even mean with that? she went to talk but felt herself not saying anything at all because she really didn't have any words for that.

"you look confused." steve chuckled out, giving her a small smile while he watched her adorable expression.

"because i am." elaine says with her eyebrows still furrowed as she steps closer to steve when a few people came past them, wanting to go up the stairs to the bleachers.

this movement made steve also step closer before he began to talk again as he looks away from her eyes for just a second, "i love you, elaine-i still do. you're the one for me, but...i'm not the one for you and i know that now."

elaine felt her expression of confusion slowly drop when the gears in her head stopped turning, coming to an halt when the answer to her question got answered. she felt like throwing up when the emotions washed over her like a truck at the fact that even her ex boyfriend thinks that she belongs with matt.

"it's okay." steve then softly said with a small smile, stuffing his hands back into his jeans pockets when he saw her defeated look.

"no, it's not." elaine then muttered with a frown on her face, "it's not fair for you. and i-i actually did like you, like i really did-"

"i know." steve then said with a small laugh, trying his best to reassure her that it was okay, "but you love matt."

elaine breathed in a sharp breath, staring at steve, who seemed rather happy about this. but she was able to tell that it does truly hurt him deep inside to see the girl that he fell in love with, loves another guy.

"i think you should tell him." steve then suddenly blurted out, his eyes flickering over to matt who was playing on the field. elaine followed his gaze, feeling her lips curve upwards at the sight of matt before she returned her gaze back to steve as small laughter escaped her.

"i really should."

"you definitely should."

she felt good when she was able to exchange laughs with steve, who was genuinely one of the best guys she's ever met and she was devastated to hurt him like this because in her eyes, he deserved so much more.
