After completing one final proof read of the contract that's supposed to go out tomorrow, I slam my laptop shut in frustration before leaning my head onto the desk. As I do so, I hear a dreaded knock at my office door. The worst timing, as per usual.
"Come in." I say loud enough for the intruder to hear and a nervous face peeks their head round the door. I sigh and rub my forehead in exasperation as I just know what's coming next. The paralegal tiptoes towards my desk, walking as if they were to take any meaningful steps the whole room might collapse around us. As he nears me, I notice his tie is slightly disheveled and I point to my own neck to signal to him what's happened.
He looks down worriedly before fixing it and then placing a tall stack of papers on my desk.
"Miss Wood said that this has just come in." He begins and I pick up the pages curiously. "She said it's urgent and needs doing tonight." He continues tentatively before giving me a sympathetic smile. Do you know how long I've been here? Four. Whole. Years. Do you know how much money I've brought into the firm? Hundreds of millions. And all this time, not even a whiff of a partner position. There's the odd pat on the back, the old, 'You'll be greatly compensated for your work, don't worry...' but no substance.
I look up at the paralegal and sigh in annoyance. "Has Miss Wood clocked out for the evening?" A few seconds of silence ensue. I can tell he doesn't want to speak negatively regarding his supervisors.
"Ye-es." He says slowly as he drags the syllables out forcefully.
"And she wants this done... tonight?" I ask, flicking through the pages once again.
"Yes." He says more confidently this time, dutifully following orders.
"It cannot be done. Find another solicitor to do it, or it won't be completed. I've only just finished up with another contract and don't have time to do this." I say bluntly and his eyes widen in desperation.
"But... she said you'd be able to do it." He says nervously, obviously unsure of what to do.
"She overestimates my capabilities then. Don't you think that, if Miss Wood herself has left the office without completing her own work, then it's slightly unreasonable to ask me to do it?" I ask, testing the waters regarding his loyalty to the partner.
Another hesitant "Ye-es." Leaves his lips as I stack the papers up in my hands, passing them back to him over the desk with a smile. I begin to pack my bag and toss my coat over my forearm as I rise from my seat.
"Between you and me, I'm going to be handing in my letter of resignation soon, so it wouldn't be much use me starting another transaction anyway." I say as I walk past him towards the door. "See yourself out, yes?" I say, giving him a small wave as I exit my office.
I have a copy of my resignation ready to send in my inbox currently, meaning as soon as I leave this building, I am no longer an employee of Carter and will therefore no longer be overworked. On the flip side, I'm also unemployed, which probably isn't something to be too proud of. Nonetheless, I have an exciting new job prospect lined up for me over coffee tomorrow.
I stride down the corridor and towards the lift, pressing the button for the ground floor as someone joins me in my wait. I look to my right to see Megumi Fushiguro, one of my co workers. I give him a smile and he reciprocates before the elevator doors ping open and we both enter. Standing in silence as the doors close, he eventually turns to me.
"You're leaving?" He asks and I turn to face him. I knew paralegals gossiped, but I didn't think word would spread this quickly. He's wearing a bereft expression on his face, which is understandable considering we've been each other's longest running friends at the firm. We both completed our training contracts at Carter together and have both been subsequently let down over the last four years due to the lack of promotion.
"Yeah..." I respond with a sigh. "I'm going to keep practicing though, maybe join another firm... as partner this time." I add with a wink but he doesn't smile back.
"They really drove you out, huh?" He responds morbidly.
I check my watch for the time. "It's 12 am. Wood sends in paralegal to my office with a whole new transaction to deal with after she's left the office. She wants it to be done for tomorrow. I say no, I've had enough at this point." I say, waving my hand in front of me in dismissal.
"Yeah, I understand." He responds simply as he turns back to face the lift doors.
"I think you'll be fine though. I mean, what's the ratio of male to female partners at the firm? 10:1? You've got a ten times larger chance than me of getting it, so I wouldn't be too disheartened." I comment in an attempt to make him feel better.
"I guess so." He says as the doors slide open and we both step out into the large glass lobby. I say goodbye to Megumi and tell him to keep in touch as I walk over to the receptionist and hand in my keycard for the final time. I turn back towards the glass facade of the building and see that it's raining. The tube is a ten minute walk away and I simply cannot deal with that right now, so I end up calling an Uber to take me home.
I wait outside under my umbrella because it now feels awkward standing in the building as my ex-colleagues pass me, giving me traitorous stares as they do so. It's okay though, my umbrella is sheltering me from the pelting rain just fine. I hear footsteps progress towards me down the street, but the top half of my vision is restricted by the umbrella. They get louder and I realise it's a pair of footsteps rather than just one.
"Hey." A male voice says from in front of me and I assume they're not talking to me considering I have my face obscured from any passers by. I'm proven wrong though as a hand grabs the edge of the umbrella gently, pulling it up to reveal my face. A couple stand in front of me and I give them a confused look as he holds my umbrella up, tilting it to get a better look at me. "Hey." He repeats again and I give him an even more perplexed look in response.
I look at the woman next to him. She's wearing a fur coat and has long black hair that reaches past her elbows, she's also wearing a tall pair of black boots, but still does not reach the height of the man next to her. My attention shifts to him and I meet his gaze. He's grinning down at me in a way that would seem menacing if it weren't for the gentle tone of his voice.
I peer through the darkness and at his face. He's got the most vibrant blue eyes and icy white hair, his complexion looks like that of a model's. "We've been looking everywhere for you..." He says in a sultry voice and I pull my umbrella out of his grasp in response, positioning it back over my shoulder to see more of his face.
"Looking for me?" I respond confused at this unneeded Friday evening - no, it's now Saturday morning, interaction.
"Yeah, you." He says low as he takes a step closer to me. "Remember? We said we'd all have a good time together." He says in an enticing voice, gesturing towards the woman next to him. I step back in response, my back brushing against the cold glass exterior of my office building.
"You've got the wrong person." I say simply and he eyes me up and down. Did he really mistake me for the woman on the street he was going to have a threesome with? Gross. But I think I would be more disgusted if he wasn't so attractive. Pretty privilege, am I right?
"Hmm... Yeah, looks like it." He says as he takes in my work attire with a laugh. I look down at my own clothes, people usually complement me on my outfits so I'm extremely offended at his reaction. The woman next to him lets out a wry laugh herself and I roll my eyes. "My bad, darling." He says as he pushes the edge of my umbrella back down in front of me and I see his feet walk away from my restricted vision.
"Asshole." I mutter under my breath as I watch him travel into the distance. Yeah, my clothes may be formal, but I probably make your life's earnings in a week so laugh all you want. My Uber finally pulls up in front of me and I shake my umbrella off before stuffing it into my bag and getting into the car, now in an extremely bad mood.
