As I walk into the meeting room on Monday morning, I see that Shoko, Suguru and Satoru have already arrived. I take a seat in my usual spot, adjacent from Satoru at the head of the table and next to Shoko. I sense a tense atmosphere and look over to Geto who's staring down at a file in front of him.
"I can do it, just give the client to me." Shoko says but Suguru holds his hand up, signalling for her to stop. I look around confused, and Satoru shakes his head at me.
"We're not taking this on." Suguru says before shutting the file.
"Not taking what on?" I ask him confused.
"Geto is refusing to take on this new client because apparently they have a bad reputation." Shoko explains.
"Bad reputation? In what way?" I ask.
"They've already been turned away by three other law firms... I don't know the exact details, it might be the workload or just the nature of the client in the first place." Suguru explains.
"Well, if it's the workload then why don't you let me handle them. I've just completed a transaction so don't have much to do." I explain and Shoko gives me a nervous look.
"Yes, what a good idea. Let Y/n handle the transaction." Satoru says from next to me and I shoot him a glare at his unexplained enthusiasm. Suguru and Shoko also give him a confused look considering up until this point he's done everything he can to hinder my career, let alone advocate for me taking on a new client.
Suguru hands me the file over the desk and I scan through it. It all seems pretty normal, there's a decent amount of work, but nothing untoward which would make a law firm reject them. It's a car wash chain who want to buy their cleaning product supplier, nothing that's never been done before.
"This all seems fine." I say as I look up to Geto.
"That's the thing, why would they reject such a normal case. It's easy money." He says and I nod in agreement.
"Just let Y/n handle it, it's fine." Satoru says again impatiently and I give him a confused look.
"I think I would need to meet with the client. I don't know why they've been shunned by other firms, but there's only one way to find out." I suggest and Suguru gives me an apprehensive look at this suggestion before the meeting disbands and I go back to my office.
I ring up the number of the firm on the front of the file and arrange a meeting for later today at my office. I continue with my work and eventually hear a knock at my door, opening it to see an unfamiliar man standing outside. I automatically assume he's the new client and welcome him into my office.
He's wearing a tailored suit and looks to be in his late 30s. He looks normal to say the least.
He takes a seat opposite my desk and I sit opposite him. We talk about the case, about what his business needs, about the reasoning for the merger and eventually begin to talk numbers. It's obvious that he knows his business well, but he's not very knowledgable in the nature of the transaction and what he should expect out of such a merger.
"I was thinking around three million for the whole supplier." He tells me and I have to keep a straight face despite the fact that I want to burst out laughing.
"Ye-es in an ideal world... however, here it says that the business is valued at 50 million, they supply hundreds of other firms too." I tell him, pointing to the figures on the sheet.
"But I'm only buying them to supply my business." He tells me and I want to roll my eyes.
"Yes, and that's fine, but the current value of the business accounts for all their dealings, not just with your firm. That means that you're going to have to pay more to acquire the whole thing." I explain to him. "Considering the recent downturn, I could probably get it for... 30 million for you? But anything other than that is simply inconceivable."
