Never say never

Shoko and I are currently sitting in the break room at Kento's offices enjoying a mid-work day coffee. I look around the room as I take a sip of my drink, it's a luxurious kitchen to say the least. Shoko picks up her blueberry muffin from the table before taking a bite.

"Do you think he hates me?" I ask her out of the blue. I've been worried about my earlier interaction with Satoru since this morning and can't believe what an awful start I've got off to regarding my relationship with him. Shoko looks up at me from her food.

"Hmm... You can never really tell with Satoru. He's kind of an enigma. The only real emotion he ever seems to show is horny." She finishes and I snigger at her remark, covering my mouth with my hand as I do so. "I think it should be fine, you have other opportunities to reconcile with him later... if you even want to that is."

I hear the door to the break room open and see Shoko tense her hand as she sees who's entered. I don't turn around and instead give her a confused look. I hear footsteps progress to my right and Satoru comes into view. He gives me a glare before grabbing Shoko's muffin off the table and taking it with him to the counter where he starts to make a coffee.

"Satoru..." She says in despair.

"It's what you get for eating all the pastries this morning." He replies as he takes a bite.

I laugh at Shoko's disheartened but accepting reaction to his excuse and as I do so Satoru gives me another glare. It seems as if I can't even exist without him acting like this around me. I turn back to my coffee, saddened at his inability to move past what happened this morning as I take a sip. I hear the door open from behind me once again and I notice Satoru turn his head in its direction to see who's entered. A smirk spreads across his face as he recognises who it is.

I hear high heels clack along the wooden floor as a woman comes into my vision and walks past him towards the fridge. She's wearing a tight pencil skirt and a tight v neck bodysuit to go with it. I see Satoru reach out and smack her ass loudly, causing her to giggle. His eyes meet mine after and I give him a disgusted look.

"Some of us are trying to enjoy our lunch Satoru." Shoko calls out, not even looking in his direction. The girl grabs what she needs out of the fridge and as she passes Satoru on her way out of the room, he stops her, whispering something in her ear as he does so which makes her giggle once again. I roll my eyes at their interaction and Shoko waves her hand in the air, signalling for me to ignore it.

The girl runs out of the door happily and Satoru finally finishes making his coffee. He leans against the kitchen counter whilst taking a bite of Shoko's muffin. His stare travels to look out of the window and I can't help but let my gaze trail over him as he does so. The way his shirt stretches tightly against his muscles and the way the material strains at his arms is... interesting to say the least. I tear my eyes away to the other side of the room before he has a chance to catch me looking at him.

If only he wasn't such an ass.

Shoko watches me do so and throws one of her empty sachets of sugar at me to catch my attention. "Not you too." She says and it's not a question, it's a statement. I laugh at her comment and how ridiculous it is.

"Not in a million years." I respond as I look back towards Satoru and see he's now giving Shoko a confused look. This causes us both to laugh at his lack of self awareness.

"If you did, I would kill you." Shoko continues.

"I would kill myself." I respond, taking a sip of my coffee and refocusing my gaze out of the far window.

Our lunch comes to an end as we finally vacate the kitchen. I spend the rest of the day continuing to call up former clients of mine in an attempt to drum up business and it's somewhat successful.

Shoko also comes in half way through the day, asking to borrow my umbrella to grab a second blueberry muffin from the bakery down the road after Satoru stole her last one. Of course, she expected I would have an umbrella knowing my level of preparedness and I hand it to her reluctantly, knowing there's a 10% chance of her actually remembering to give it back to me at the end of the day.

I get so carried away with my work that I don't realise it's already 11pm at night. Once again, I've managed to stay well past the time I should have left, but this incidence I'm not annoyed. It was on my own terms and I was actually enjoying my work, so as I collect my things I have a smile on my face (unlike when I would leave Carter this late). I take one final gaze out of my office window before I leave, looking wistfully at London's sparkling skyline.

I push my way through my glass doors as I pull my phone out of my bag, ready to order an Uber. I take the steps down to the lobby as my heels clack along the marble surface. I reach the ground floor and the lift doors ping open as I do so. I turn curiously to see who it could be and two blue eyes meet mine. His gaze shows no emotion as he looks away from me and I do the same, continuing to my final destination of the exit ahead.

I leave the building and stand outside, checking to see that my Uber is only three minutes away. It's still relatively humid, so I don't mind waiting outside. Satoru comes out too and stands a few meters away from me. Far enough away so that we don't have to acknowledge each other's presence.

I feel a drop of water hit my nose and soon after I feel a second drop of rain on my forehead. I reach into my bag, searching furiously for my umbrella as I do so, only to realise that I lent it to Shoko after lunch. I hit my forehead in frustration as I hear an umbrella shoot up from next to me. The rain gets heavier and I begin to feel it through my blouse.

I look over to where the noise of an umbrella came from, only to see Satoru standing under it. He doesn't offer me shelter, and even if he did, I wouldn't accept. Thankfully, my Uber comes quickly and I run towards it, sheltering my face from the rain as I do so. I slip in the back and shut the door, leaving Satoru outside the building in the rain as I do so.

I look down at my rain splattered shirt as I lean back into the car seat, sighing as I stare out of the Uber window. I don't know why I'm annoyed that he didn't offer me to come under his umbrella, I don't have any right to expect anything from Satoru, especially after how I spoke to him in the meeting. I rest my head in my hands and feel my phone buzz in my bag as I pull it out.

I hold it to my face as the screen lights up, only to see a message from Geto.

From Geto:
Hope your first day was okay and Satoru didn't scare you off, if he keeps acting like this we're planning on banning him from any further meetings for all of our sakes.

To Geto:
Haha, thanks, but that won't be necessary. He's going to have to do a lot worse than that if he wants to get rid of me.

Famous last words.
