Next Saturday morning I wake up alone in bed. I haul myself downstairs as I throw on one of Satoru's sweatshirts to make myself decent, and as I do so I see that something in my living room has changed. I rub my eyes as I descend the stairs, not quite believing what I'm seeing.
Along the TV unit on the far wall there's a string of tinsel intertwined with fairy lights. On top of that, my regular couch cushions have been replaced with festive ones coloured red and white. Along my bay windowsill there's an array of snow globes, and I walk over to shake one, confirming that what I'm seeing is real.
I hear the kitchen door swing open from behind me and I spin around quickly, one of the snow globes remaining in my hand. Satoru enters and he looks tired. Did he get up early just to do all of this?
"You're up." He says as he makes his way towards me and I set the snow globe back down on the windowsill.
"You did all this?" I ask.
"Do you like it? I found your Christmas supplies and drove to my place to grab what I had." He says as he wraps his arms around my waist, pushing his face into the crook of my neck as he does so.
"I love it." I tell him with a huge smile. I can't believe he went through all this trouble after I only mentioned putting the Christmas decorations up in passing yesterday.
"I left the tree though, I thought we could do that together." He says before looking over to the other side of the room. I follow his gaze, only to see a magnificent, bare Christmas tree placed neatly by my fireplace. I didn't even notice it when I first came in.
"Oh my god... Satoru." I say as I shake my head from side to side.
"What?" He says as his brow furrows slightly.
"I love it all, so much." I say as I throw my arms around his neck and pull him into me. Everything he does is just so... thoughtful. "Thank you." I say against his chest as his arms embrace me back.
As we eventually pull away from one another, Satoru leads me over to the Christmas tree by my hand. He's gathered various boxes of baubles and decorations and arranged them neatly on the floor. We rifle through them together before selecting a few and beginning to hang them on the tree. He has to do the higher up ones because I can't reach, but we make a good team.
I eventually come across the angel topper that I had stored away and hand it to Satoru to place on top. He looks down at it thoughtfully before holding towards me.
"You should put it on." He says as he hands it back to me. I stare at the item in my hands before looking back up at the tree.
"Don't be silly, I can't reach." I tell him with a laugh as I hold out the topper in his direction again. In response, he pushes my hand away and shakes his head.
"Here, I'll help." He says as he walks around me, positioning himself behind me. I feel his arms slide up under my shirt and wrap around my bare torso as he hoists me into the air with ease. I stretch my arms upwards as he lifts me, so I'm now parallel with the top of the tree. I slide the angel onto the top branch and clap my hands together in satisfaction. "Good job." Satoru says as he puts me back down.
"Now..." I begin as I crouch down to the ground and crawl under the tree to where the plug socket is. I push the adapter into the socket and a golden light can be seen emanating from the tree even from beneath it. "Is it nice?" I ask as I begin to crawl backwards.
"Wow." I hear Satoru say and I move faster, quickly springing to my feet and returning to his side.
"Wow..." I repeat as I gaze upon quite possibly, one of the most beautiful Christmas trees I've ever seen. It's a perfect mix of Satoru and my decorations, a mishmash of styles, but nonetheless it looks amazing. I feel Satoru's arm wrap around my shoulder as I lean into him, still taking in the sight before me. "It looks so good." I say proudly and he nods in response.
