I smiled as I panted. My breaths labored as I curtsied to my last dance partner. The gentleman bowed across from me as we stepped away from one another. His feet guiding him to a new dancing partner as I moved completely off the dance floor. It had been an hour and I hadn't been able to snack quite yet.
Apparently my stunt down the stairs caught many eyes which led to many males asking for a dance. The songs gentle and upbeat as the artists acted as puppeteers of the dance floor. I didn't fight it. I wanted to let go, I wanted my feet to be blistered by the sunrise. My ankles swollen and my heart unable to return to normal beats for the next two days.
I knew my cheeks and neck had to be flushed with the exertion of continuous dancing. Which is exactly why I made my way over to the food and drink area. My eyes set on the water in an elegant container for self pouring. The wall was lined with caterers ready to assist should they be needed. I gave them all a smile and a thank you as I tipped my head back. My manners forgotten as I drank the shot of water as if I were at the gym.
I suddenly remembered myself and awkwardly grinned as I poured a larger amount of water and proceeded to take small sips. A few of the caterers laughed softly while one assured me they understood.
I grabbed a small clear plastic plate and placed some fruit upon it. My eyes glowing at the delicacies before me. Oh how envious I was of all those who didn't have to diet. Don't get me wrong, I chose this path. But if I didn't have a fight in a month's time, I'd be indulging in everything before my eyes.
"Are you sure you don't want one of these?" I looked at the older woman who smiled kindly gesturing to the chocolate covered strawberries. I pursed my lips, the devil on my shoulder whispering deviously. The angel on my other said similar thoughts that eventually led to me grabbing two. One to treat myself, the second to sedate my craving.
With my water and my plate of fruit, I grabbed a few napkins before moving to find an empty table. I watched the pairings dance across the floor, their movements so elegant that I wondered how often they attended these types of events. I am by no means a bad dancer, but some of these people could dance. They weren't just stepping, they were gliding. The lead of each pairing confident as the follower moved in sync. Some of the older couples moved just as fluidly despite their age, something I was deeply impressed by.
I couldn't help the large smile that plastered itself on my face when I saw a familiar blue dress and a familiar dark grey suit.
I watched the two glide. Laughter escaped my mother as Gray grinned proudly. I felt my heart swell at the sight. This was the kind of love my mother deserved. Not some two-timing businessman who couldn't keep his dick in his pants. Some days I wished they had divorced sooner. But she stayed for me. Being that they both were a product of divorce, she didn't want me to have to deal with it. And for that I know she is truly one of the strongest people I've ever known.
My face darkened as I thought of my father. My hands clenched the empty water cup tightly without me knowing. I was only shaken by the hand that was extended to me.
I followed the large hand to the tall male that accompanied it. My ears picking up the softening of the notes as I realized this song was about to end. Behind the male I saw my mother get dipped and Gray lay a soft kiss upon her. The action snapping me out if it as I followed the rest of the body up to a grinning face.
My face instantly softened as my eyes widened at the male. He had to be six foot something. Dirty blonde hair slicked elegantly backwards. Over his eyes was a navy blue mask with black marbling lines. I was taken aback by the swirling amusement in his blue eyes that looked nearly grey in the light.
Strong shoulders supported the black suit, his tie a navy blue to match his mask. I couldn't help my eyes as they traveled downwards to his strong thighs that were wrapped in the black material.
"I assume you understand that I am asking you to dance?" I could barely hear him over the band. My eyes snapped back up to his, my cheeks flushing as I nodded. A knowing smirk decorated his face as I struggled to recover from clearly checking him out.
"Yes, my apologies, I was drifting in my thoughts." I spoke as the next song began the music slightly drowning out our voices. I quickly wiped my hand on a napkin before placing my hand in his. My cold as ice hand instantly melting in his grasp as his hand wrapped around mine. There was no way I was about to refuse a dance from another well attributed gentleman.
"Don't worry, I was as well." I kept my eyes from going wide at his quiet whisper. His lips grazing my ear as he spoke. Something about this man was familiar. I know I hadn't danced with him before- I would have remembered. The way he spoke almost seemed too elegant. As if he was putting on a show.
I casted the thought to the side, perhaps we were both looking for a fun fairytale moment. So I didn't try to think on it as much. After all, why ruin the magic of this moment.
The song was uplifting, the violin strong as a steady beat hummed beneath it. A handful of the artists were taking a break as those playing continued. I could only imagine the lyrics to the song as I was swept away in a dance with this male in front of me.
His left hand outstretched holding my right as my left sat on his upper right arm while his right hand gently pressed to my bare back just on my shoulder blade. We were only a step away from one another as he began to lead me through his approach at this song that was almost too amped up to ballroom dance too.
And he eventually agreed with that sentiment as we began to skip around the floor. More pairings joining. Instead of gliding we bounded with the tempo. I couldn't help the laugh that escaped my lips as my partner spun me repeatedly. My dress swishing as I clung to his hand to keep from falling while he pulled me back to him.
We abandoned the classical position and switched to holding hands as we danced around.
As the song ended I noticed how both of us were panting slightly but our smiles of delight were matching. There was a soft pause as we stared at one another, pairings moving off the floor as we stood still.
I realized that the two of us were the only ones on the dance floor and went to thank him and inform him that I had fun however my words were cut short by his action of holding his hand out for me again. None of my other partner's had the chance to get me two dances in a row.
I rose an eyebrow to which he matched. I was curious, so I set my hand in his once again. And like that was the signal, the artists began playing again.
Except I knew this song. The intro giving it away immediately.
