Sam and I agreed to meet up at the bar where Amy was holding her concert. The crowd was still small by the time I got there, but that's because I arrived an hour early like the dummy I am. But hey, better early than late, right?
"Sup, Red?" Said Amy as she waved to me from the stage. She and her band were setting up for the show; the drums were already set up, the sound system was in place, and the band had their instruments ready.
"Sorry I'm early," I said, grinning a little. "I guess I'm too excited."
"Yeah you are," I heard a familiar voice behind me; it was Kevin. "You almost left me behind."
"What are you doing here?" I asked, shocked.
"I wanna see the concert, too," he said. "You were talking so much about it during lunch, I decided to come, too."
"Dad and Sarah know you're here?" I asked, crossing my arms.
"Yeah, I told them I wanted to go to the concert too," said Kevin, shrugging. "Mom told you to take me, remember?"
"Not really," I said. I tried thinking back to when I left... shoot.
I was too excited to pay attention, but Kevin's right; Sarah DID ask me to take him. I must have absentmindedly agreed to take my little brother to my date.
"Kevin," I started, sighing. "Um, I'm meeting someone here, and-"
"It's not April Mann, is it?" He said, grimacing. "I thought you two broke up!"
"We did, and it's not her," I said. "It's someone new, and I really like her, so-"
"Who?" Asked Kevin. "Is she ugly?"
"YOU TAKE THAT BACK!" I said, glaring at the little brat. "She's hot as hell!"
"Eh, you thought April Mann was hot as hell," Kevin said, shrugging. "Your taste in girls is currently under suspicion, Sis."
"Hey Kevin, wassup?" Said Amy as she walked up to me and Kevin. "First concert?"
"N-no!" Kevin defensively said, blushing a bit. It totally was his first concert.
"I'm also babysitting," I said, grinning. "Gotta make sure Kevin here stays away from the alcohol."
"Oh come on!" Kevin protested. "I don't need a babysitter!"
"Yes you do, now quit whining or I'll tell Sarah to come pick you up," I said, teasing him.
"Fine," he said, slouching a bit. "But you can't keep an eye on me all night! What with your allegedly hot date and all..."
"I can help," said Todd, approaching Kevin from behind, which caused my little brother to jump up in surprise. "Hey Red, Lil' Kevy, wassup?"
"Stop calling me that," Kevin said, pouting like the little kid he is.
Ten minutes later, Jolie and Gabe arrived; I greeted them both, and then they both greeted my little brother.
"Wassup, Baby Dork?" Asked Gabe as he put Kevin into a headlock and gave him a noogie.
"Quit calling me that!" Kevin complained as Gabe let him go.
"Ohayo, Kevy-chan!" Said Jolie, bowing. "How are you?"
"Man, I'm mad is what I am!" Said Kevin, pouting. "Everyone treatin' me like a little kid..."
"Technically, you are," said Gabe, smirking. "Not old enough to drink, yet, remember?"
"S-so?" Kevin asked.
"OK guys, that's enough," I said. "Kevin, don't let it get to ya, OK? Come on, I'll buy you a soda."
"Fine," he said as he followed me to the bar. I ordered us two sodas; I don't drink alcohol. I can't risk it taking me to the Black Bug Room. And certainly not tonight!
Ten minutes later, and I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn around and saw Sam.
"Hey, you made it!" I said, getting up and shaking her hand. She was wearing a crop top and ripped jeans. "Damn, girl, looking good!"
"Is she your date?" Kevin whispered to my ear.
"Sam, this is my little brother, Kevin," I said, feeling embarrassed. "Kevin, this is Sam. My, uh, date tonight."
"Nice to meet you," said Sam as she shook Kevin's hand. "So, uh, fair warning, Daisy. Paige is coming, and she's bringing the Fairy."
"Goddammit," I said, sighing. "Well, so long as we ignore him, he won't ruin the night."
"Who's this Fairy you two are talking about?" Asked Kevin. "And who's Paige?"
"Mutual friend of ours," said Sam. "And the Fairy is her piece of sh-uh, boyfriend of hers."
"What makes him a piece of sh-?" He began to ask, before I nudged him.
"Mind your language," I reprimanded him.
"Long story short, dude's a jerk," said Sam. "Hey, Daisy, I'll be right back; I gotta, uh, nose my powder."
"Sure, no prob," I said, and I watched her as she went to the bathroom. Then I turned to Kevin and asked "She ugly enough for ya?"
"Well, she's a step up from April Mann, that's for sure," said Kevin. "And, you know, she's kinda pretty in that Amazonian way. Personally not my type, though; I prefer-"
"Dude," said Gabe as he sat next to me and Kevin. "Who was THAT?"
"My date," I said, noticing he was blushing like crazy.
"That," he said, grinning like an idiot. "Is a whole lotta woman."
"RIGHT?" I asked, grinning. He and I high fived.
"Hey, if it doesn't work out between you two," he said, still sporting that grin. "Put in a good word for me?"
"Uh, sure?" I said, shrugging.
"Gabe, come on," I heard Todd say as he made his way towards us. "You're being a third wheel here. You too, Kev. Come with me, OK? Let your sister have her date."
"Is this OK, sis?" Kevin asked. I nodded and smiled at him; I'd trust Todd with my life. "OK, Todd. Let's go check out your girlfriend's show."
I smiled; in all honesty, it's better for Kevin to hang out with mature guys like Todd and Gabe than his own sister. I like the idea of him having fun, having this new experience; he doesn't need his big sis to be babysitting him. He's a young adult now.
Shoot, he's a young adult. In my mind, though, he'll always be my little baby brother, whom I saw grow up right before my eyes.
Oh. Yeah, that's what I've been doing these past twelve years; I've been watching Kevin grow up. Huh...I was there his first day of Middle School, High School, his graduation, and I even saw him off on his first day of college. What a trip it's been!
Damn...where does the time go?
I looked over to the entrance to watch the people come in. It was getting more and more crowded by the second. With five minutes to go, the bar was PACKED! Man, Amy and her band are more famous than I thought!
Eventually, I saw Paige and her jerk of a boyfriend enter. My heart sank as soon as I saw her face; she looked so unhappy...
