'What's going on?" Paige asked, looking shocked to see me here. "What are you doing here?"
I blanked out. I just blanked out. I didn't think I'd get this far! I thought I'd give up by now, or that I'd somehow fail, or...no. No, I won't let myself go down a bad place. Not here, not now.
"Uhhh," I began, but my brain was not working properly because I had the dumb. "Soooooo..."
That's when I felt the word vomit coming out.
"You left without saying goodbye, much less even letting me know you were leaving," I began, the words just coming out of my mouth without my input. "Which SUCKS because you know I hate that, considering what I've been through when I was a kid! And I was gonna send you and email, but I went and did THIS because I couldn't stand the idea that I'd never get to see you again in person without ever even knowing why! So I got on a plane and flew down here and slept in an airport terminal and ate at Subway two days in a row because that's all they had at that airport and-"
I had to take a deep breath. I needed to control myself.
"And..." I gulped. "I...I didn't want it to end like that, ya know? I didn't want the last time we saw each other to be me pushing you away because I got nervous over not wearing a bra and I didn't want you to feel weirded out by my hardened nipples."
DAISY, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SHUT THE HELL UP! Seriously, I gotta learn not to overshare!
"Oh," was all Paige said, before she started chuckling. "Who told you I was gonna be gone forever?"
Oh my.
"Uh..." I began. It was then I realized that Sam never actually told me Paige was going back home for good; that was a blank I filled in myself. "See...uh..."
"I came back home to clear my head," she said. "You know...the whole Paul thing."
"Well I for one am glad to know my daughter has such a good friend," said Pastor Thompson as he put his hand on her shoulder. "It's not just anyone who's willing to go cross country for the sake of someone they care about! Daisy, was it? You've touched my heart; please, come in!"
I hesitantly entered Casa de Thompson; gotta tell ya, the inside was precisely what I expected it. Pictures of Jesus were everywhere, with some porcelain clown figures dotting the coffee table and bookshelves. The carpet was beige, and the wallpaper had duckies on it. That was cute!
"Honey, Brandi, Michael! We have a visitor!" Pastor Thompson called out to his family. An older woman who looked to be about forty something and a young, twenty-something girl entered the living room. The twenty-something girl was soon followed by some brown haired guy who gave off Try-Hard Alpha Male vibes.
"Allow me to introduce the clan," said Pastor Thompson. "This lovely woman is my wife, Elena. This young beauty is my youngest daughter, Brandi, and this strapping young man is her husband, Michael."
That girl, Brandi, looked really young. I remembered what Paige said, about her mom already being a mom by age 27 with two kids; damn, the women in this family marry YOUNG! Anyway, Pastor Thompson told the rest of the family what I had done; Mrs Thompson looked happy, but Brandi and Michael clearly didn't give a shit.
"Oh a friend of Paige's!" Mrs Thompson said. "Oh, it's so nice to have a friend of hers over! You absolutely MUST stay for lunch!"
"Uh," I began, too shy to say no.
"Mom, Dad? I'm gonna show Daisy my room, OK?" Said Paige as she grabbed my hand. "Call us when lunch's ready!"
Paige dragged me up the stairs to her room. Wow, her room was NOT what I expected it to be; she had Star Trek posters on her wall, models of the Enterprise on her shelves, a lot of DVD's, and a TV with a PS2 AND a PS3 hooked up to it! Her bed was simple, though she also had a Star Trek bed sheet, and her closet had some really girly looking clothes. Besides her shoes, though, I noticed she had some weights, too.
"Why'd you come?" She asked as she sat on the bed.
"Because..." I couldn't find the right words. "I...I wanted to see you again."
She started chuckling. "I was gonna come back."
"I didn't know that," I said. I felt like the biggest idiot in the world at that moment.
"Well, you've met my family," she said, shrugging and grimacing. "Did my dad get weird on the bus ride?"
"Not really," I said. "He just asked me some questions, and I answered."
"I see," she said, looking down. "Won't Sam miss you?"
"We're not together anymore," I said.
"WHAT!?"
"I mean, it's not like we were ever REALLY together," I said, word vomiting again. "And she figured out that even though I really liked her, I had my heart on someone else, which SUCKED because I didn't even know, and even if I knew how I felt I wouldn't have tried anything because I'm a goddamn IDIOT who-"
"Shhh," she said, putting her finger on my lips. "Don't be so hard on yourself, Daisy. I know how hard it is to figure stuff out about yourself."
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Yup," she said, pointing at a poster of a red head from Star Trek. "That's Dr. Beverly Crusher. When I was a little girl, I thought she was the coolest woman on TV. She was smart, she was strong, and she was so pretty. Like REALLY pretty. I thought for sure that I just admired her, that I wanted to be like her..."
"Uhuh?"
"But when I was thirteen," she said, chuckling, tears rolling down her eyes. "I realized I didn't want to be like her, I wanted to be WITH her. I wanted her to hold me, kiss me; it was weird. I talked to Sam about it, and she told me that some girls kiss other girls. I told her that's impossible for me because I liked guys, but then she told me the magic word: bisexual. She told me that meant someone who liked guys AND girls. After I did some soul searching, that's when I accepted my truth: that I'm bisexual."
"Heh," I chuckled. "I figured out I was a lesbian by watching Xena."
"Oh, I loved Xena as a kid," she said. "I even have the whole series on DVD!"
"Sweet!" I said. "Hey, what games ya got?"
"Check'em out," she said as she showed me her collection.
Final Fantasies One through Twelve, Kingdom Hearts One AND Two, the original God of War trilogy, Elder Scrolls Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, Marvel vs SNK 2001, a whole lotta Guilty Gear games, Street Fighters 3 and 4, King of Fighters...a whole lot of fighting games, honestly.
"Awesome," I said, smiling.
"Yeah," she said. Putting the games away. "I also got Marvel vs Capcom 2 on my PS3, plus Darkstalkers Resurrection."
"Woah, Darkstalkers?" I asked. "You're a fan, too? I thought I was the only one! I mean, that franchise is soooo obscure, ya know?"
"Yeah, I know," she bitterly said. "Thanks a lot, Capcom. They literally killed the franchise by not releasing a REAL new game since the late 90′s!"
"Right!?" I said, and we had a laugh. That's when I felt brave enough to come clean. I took a deep breath, and said- "The real reason I came up here, Paige...is because I like you."
"Aww, I like you too!" She said as she patted my shoulder. I grabbed her hand gently.
"No, what I mean is," I said as I kissed her hand. "I like you."
