Paige, Kevin and I watched as Jerkface ran off, crying like the little baby he is. I couldn't help but smirk; he's had it a long time coming. Fly on outta here, you selfish, mewling eunuch!

"Now what?" Kevin asked.

"I dunno," said Paige. "Sam's picking me up in two hours, sooo..."

"Huh," I said, putting my hands in my pockets. "Damn, and it's too early for lunch."

"And I gotta leave for the dorm in an hour," said Kevin, frowning.

"College?" Asked Paige.

"Yup," said Kevin. "I'm just doing General Studies now; hoping to find something to focus on later along the road. You?"

"I majored in Business," said Paige, shrugging. "Didn't care for it, though. What about you, Daisy?"

"Computer Sciences," I said. "Programming, that sort of thing."

"Nice," said Paige.

"I should head home," said Kevin. "See ya; nice to meet you, Paige."

"Nice to meet the guy who helped save me," Paige said, smiling. This made Kevin blush a little.

Nu-uh, Kevin. She's too old for you. Move along.

Kevin left, leaving us alone. It was awkward for a minute, but then I spoke up.

"Sorry," I said. "I guess I wasn't much help."

"Are you kidding me?" She asked. "You did the ONE thing no one's ever done for me before; stood up for me. You have any idea how much that meant to me?"

"I guess," I said, blushing. "But I only did it when Kevin was looking to get into a fight."

"Nu-uh," said Paige, shaking her head. "It's like you said; that jerk had the responsibility to shake off what Kevin said and not try getting into a fight with him. He's honestly a coward, and I'm glad I can see it now."

"Yeah," I said, nodding. "I'm sorry he wasn't who you wanted him to be."

"Eh, whatever," she said, shrugging. "Not my first rodeo dealing with a piece of filth."

"Hopefully, it's your last," I said.

"Yeah, well," she said, sighing. "Like I said; I am terribly unlucky with love. Whenever I'm super interested in someone, either they're unavailable or I'm unavailable. Sometimes both."

"I know that feeling," I said, kicking the dirt below me. "Seems to me like I never get the girl, ya know?

"Well you got her this time," said Paige, blushing a bit. "Uh, Sam, I mean. You got Sam."

"Yeah, I know you meant her," I said. "Don't worry about it."

"She's great, you know?" She said, giggling. I think she felt nervous about something. I got a suspicious feeling in my stomach.

Could it be? No way...

"How'd you two meet?" I asked.

"We grew up in the same town," she said. "We've been friends since childhood, actually. Then...some stuff went down, and we ended up moving away from Delaware all the way down here. She's my sister by oath."

"That's lovely," I said, smiling. "Friends like that are the family we choose."

"She actually used to be super skinny," said Paige, chuckling. "One day her crush stood her up on a date. To console her, I took her to the gym where I practiced my Karate. She started pumping iron, and she's never stopped."

"Has she always been tall?" I asked.

"Our classmates always called her Giraffe, Tree Girl, Skyscraper" she said, looking down sadly. "That's part of why she's so sensitive about her height."
