_The road was rocky due to the earthquake, but they still managed to get to the nearest hospital in seven minutes.
As a matter of routine, Hen and Chim informed the doctors and could only watch helplessly as their friend was taken away to get a CT. They wanted to stay, they really did, but they knew that they were needed out there. Sighing sadly, they left the bulding and rejoined their team to answer incoming calls.
Diana didn't notice any of this, as she slipped in and out of consciousness. Voices reached her ears, but she couldn't decipher them. Bright lights shined down on her, but she had no energy to close her eyes under them. It was like her body didn't listen to her anymore.
She felt numb.
_"I'm home," a young girl screamed out upon entering the house, dumping her backpack next to the door.
"I'm in the kitchen," a deep voice answered her.
Soon, she found herself sitting at the kitchen isle, peeking over her father's shoulder at the newspaper he was reading. "Anything interesting?"
"Nothing you would understand, nor be interested in."
She hummed at his answer before standing up and walking to the fridge. "Have you eaten already? I guess not. Is Judd in his room?"
"Yah, came home an hour ago and didn't say a thing," the old man grunted again. "Not that I'm complaining."
Rolling her eyes, she took out some ingredients to prepare them dinner. "You don't have any plans for dinner yet, right?"
Over the newspaper in his hands, he gave her the look, silently ridiculing her for even asking that.
"I'll take that as a no. That's good, because I brought some bio paprika, tomatoes and carrots from the farmers market. And I bought noodle plates and cheese in the supermarket. I'm gonna prepare the best lasagna for you. Mother Elisabeth and Mother Anna often made it, with Mother Deborah watching over us kids."
She didn't notice the way her father flinched at the mention of her 'mothers'. She was still young, just nine years old to be exact, she couldn't possibly understand what happened when the police took her away from the sect she grew up in.
"You shouldn't go so far on your own, ask one of your brothers to accompany you in the future."
"It's fine," she shrugged. "I like learning and seeing new things every day. At home, we grew our vegetables and gut our chickens ourselves, we never went shopping. It's interesting." Before he could make his concerns for her safety known to her, she continued. "Besides, Randy has his finals coming up and I don't want to disturb him. And Judd-" she paused, not knowing to continue.
"Is behaving like he is the nine year old in the house," their father guessed, making her nod softly at him.
"I don't know how to talk to him. He doesn't seem to like me very much."
"Juddy just doesn't know you," Stuart tried to assure her. "But you know what they say? The love of a man goes through his stomach. Go and prepare dinner already."
"Yes, Sir."
_"Miss Ryder? Miss Ryder can you hear me?"
Diana stirred in the hospital bed. The voice kept calling her name, but she had trouble following it. She wanted to open her eyes, only for her to completely fail. There was no energy left in her body.
