"So, the footage was a bust."
"Yep," Diana nodded. "The car was facing the wrong direction. All we have is the other cars in the lot. Two were also facing the wrong way, the third didn't have a front camera and the last one left before the victim was killed."
"Crap."
"But just a few minutes after the accident, another car arrives in the parking lot, and then another. The first one had a dental in the front."
"Human-shaped, by any chance?"
"Yes, Sergeant. We looked for the car and found it in a scrap yard. Owner remembered what the man who brought it looked like. He's sitting with a sketcher as we speak."
"Good, keep me updated."
_So, what are you gonna do?"
Diana's hand sank, the fork clinking with the plate. She slowly chewed up. "Buck blabbed, didn't he?"
"Who else," Eddie chuckled. "But seriously, what are you gonna do?"
"Nothing, it was just an innocent little kiss on the cheek. It was late, I was happy that I had a new lead to follow. I'll just pretend it didn't happen."
"Ah huh, all right."
"What?"
"Nothing." The man said innocently, his voice unusually high. "So... why not start with that now?"
"What?"
Eddie nodded at her, so she turned around, finding none other than Bradford and Chen behind her.
Diana wanted to curse herself for choosing to eat lunch at the food truck near the station. At least Eddie was with her because he got off work early and had some time to spare before he could get his son from school.
"Well then, last period ends in twenty minutes. I gotta go. Bye."
"Eddie," she exclaimed in a hushed tone, but he had already pressed a small kiss on her cheek and stormed off towards his truck.
The detective slowly sank back into her seat, fearing what was about to come.
"Hey Diana, mind if we sit?"
Said woman looked at Lucy, who - despite asking first - had already sat down. When her TO didn't do the same, she raised an eyebrow at him and he begrudgingly did so.
Lucy began talking about something, not noticing that the other two didn't listen. Bradford was solely focused on his food and refused to take his eyes off of it, while Diana watched him avoiding her look. She nervously chewed on her bottom lip before averting her eyes.
Nothing happened, the detective reminded herself. But why am I thinking so much about it, then?
She sighed, her action not going unnoticed by Lucy.
"What is it, are you okay? Do you have a headache?"
"I'm okay," Diana smiled. "It... was nothing, really."
For the first time since he arrived, Tim looked at her. He had caught the hint she sent and was relieved they saw it the same way.
Yet, why did he feel his heart tighten inside his chest?
For the last few days, he had wondered what had happened that night. Not only had she - fully self-consciously - kissed his cheek, but he had also let it happen just like that, unable to move till another detective approached him concerning a different case.
Surprisingly, the memory of her excited laugh was replaying in his mind again and again. How her eyes glowed when she got the idea, how happy she was and also how she had - without thinking - leaned in and pressed her soft lips against his cheek. As quick as it had happened, Diana had disappeared. When he closed his eyes, he could still feel the ghost of her lips on his cheek. It kept him awake at night.
