_"Ah, finally back," Diana sighed happily.
"What, was your vacation that bad?"
She shook her head. "Don't get me wrong, it was more than just nice seeing my friends and family again but I just missed this, you know? Solving cases and stuff. I mean there was a bomb threat at the wedding that I went to-"
"What?"
"- but everything turned out alright. I mean, my old Captain is still a little depressed he didn't become the commissioner," she mumbled, glancing down at her phone "... but Jake and Amy are taking care of it. On their honeymoon."
Charlie narrowed his eyes at her. "Their honeymoon? If I had to take care of Sergeant Caradine on my Honeymoon I would-"
"Don't tell me you want to propose to her?" Diana stared at him in anticipation.
"Well," he began, scratching the back of his neck. "I mean, I did take a look at the rings here."
The two of them turned around themselves, inspecting the mess surrounding them. They stood in the middle of a jeweller that was broken into in the night. The thieves had stolen jewellery worth approximately 120 thousand dollars and destroyed and shattered glass cabinets and the security system which were also worth around 15 thousand dollars.
"What about that one." Diana pointed at one with a princess cut that was left behind by the thieves.
Charlie shook his head. "Not her style I'm afraid. Then again, I don't know what her style with proposal rings is."
"She had a sister, right? Ask her, most girls usually started dreaming about their wedding from early on."
He turned back towards her. "Really? What about you then?"
'You're going to be a fine woman one day, Diana. If you do good, maybe then the Lord will give you his blessing like the rest of us.'
Diana shuddered at the memory, goosebumps covering her skin within seconds. She wrapped her arms around herself tightly. "I'm the exception, I guess. Not important anyway, I don't plan on marrying anyone."
The man decided not to pressure her. He had noticed how uncomfortable she became just now. Without doubt there was more to that story than what he knew, but he would give his friend and partner the time she needed and would patiently listen to her when she would be ready to share.
"Detectives!" An officer waved them over. He was standing in front of a desk and scrolling trough the footage of the security cameras the thieves destroyed. Thankfully, everything up until their destruction was uploaded to a black box that was in the office in the back of the shop they failed to go through.
"Did you find something?"
The officer turned the display for them to see. "Here we've got the dumbest thieves ever. Didn't even wear masks."
"Damn, that's Roderick Kepner, I arrested him two times already."
"Well, three time's the charm. Let's go talk to him and find out who his friends are."
Half an hour later, Diana and Charlie stood on the front porch of a pretty shabby house, knocking on the door.
A woman opened, her arms crossed in front of her chest. "He isn't here."
The detectives shared a look.
"Good, you know already who we're looking for. We're the detectives Park and Ryder, Miss...?"
