Amina looked at her husband when he began laughing at their son. He made it clear that he was old enough to dress himself.
"Stop being a dick" She smacked his arm.
"I'm sorry Mimmo, but you look a hot mess."
"Great!"
"Not great. Let's change." She held her hand out for her son. He wore cargo shorts with a long sleeve shirt under a short-sleeved with mixed match knee high socks and crocs.
"I wanna wear this."
"Okay let's fix it up then."
"No" She looked at João with a stern look. He took her hand and they went back to his bedroom. Amina began looking through his dresser.
"Sorry. I just want to look ugly"
"You can never look ugly João, you're beautiful." She kissed his cheek before grabbing him a clean pair of socks.
"I don't want to be beautiful. I want to be ugly"
"But why?" She was surprised, João usually loved to be complimented so both her and Jamie made sure to do it every single day.
"If I look beautiful they will want me back" his face crumpled as he began to cry. Amina rushed to hug him but he only began to cry harder thinking about the fact that this could be the last hug from one of his favorite people ever.
"What's going on?" Jamie walked in.
"I'm sorry, Mimmo. I hope I didn't hurt your feelings. Papa wasn't trying to be mean. I don't want you to look silly when you go outside because people will make fun of you and I don't want to have to get on anyone's ass. Make sense?" João nodded.
"That's not why he's crying. He thinks that if he looks beautiful his parents will take him back"
"Oh no. Come here, Mimmo" João walked up to Jamie with his head down. He picked him up and kissed his cheek.
"You're not going anywhere. You understand?"
"But what if they want me back. Samira's parents took her back"
"That's different. You're not going anywhere."
"Don't let them please, daddy. I'll be good. I'll even take out the trash" Jamie smiled.
"You don't have to do that, bambino. Let mommy change your clothes. If you dress like a bum they will think we're not taking care of you. We take care of you right?" João nodded, pulling the shirts over his head one Jamie put him down.
"He doesn't look like a bum, just not put together"
"Sooo. . . . .A bum" Amina shook her head at her husband as she dressed João in khaki pants and a white polo.
"Wowww. Look at my handsome boy." João smiled shyly hiding behind Amina.
"I need my shoes, mama"he rummaged through his closet looking for his white sambas.
"They're in the closet by the door. Put them on when we're about to leave, you know you're not supposed to wear your shoes in the house."
"Okay!" He went downstairs.
"Babe, come on. We're going to be late"
"I don't care" Amina was usually very punctual but she was still going through her own things. Samira was taken out of their care and given back to her mother since she completed all of her classes and attended all meetings and workshops. That really bothered Jamie and Amina. Amina a little more because she began to worry about João. Although they had him for a few years he wasn't adopted yet so legally he still belonged to the state.
