"Come on,princess." Amina carried Samira into her dance class. She ran over to her instructor and hugged her legs.
"Ah, Samira. You look beautiful" She smiled at the three year old before asking Amina for her slippers.
"Hapa, mtoto. Haraka." Amina held the tiny ballet slippers out for her daughter, rushing her to put them on and prepare for class.
"Okay, mama. You can sit on the bleachers back there." She nodded, thanking the woman. Knowing that this was one of the places that Samira didn't cling to her she took out her laptop to get some work done.
Meanwhile Jamie was rushing João to his class. Amina and Jamie decided to switch children and roles for the day. So Amina had Samira and Jamie had João.
"Daddy, I'm scared. She's going to yell at me"
"No she won't, it's okay, mimmo. Should i go first?" João nodded knowing his instructor was going to tell him off.
The class stopped turning their attention to the door, making the older woman clap her hands to regain their attention.
"Focus, keep going. Be professional" She scolded speed walking over to Jamie.
"Please remove your shoes in my studio."
"I apologize" Jamie took his shoes off and picked them up.
"You're late João"
"Yes. Are you Ms. Vaganova?"
"Yes"
"Okay, sorry. I had to get my daughter dressed and then find your class for João-"
"I don't like excuses Mr.Giordano. I hope you're warmed up João, are you?" He shook his head, eyes glued to his sock clad feet.
"Start stretching"
"Yes ma'am" João began stretching. Jamie stood him up and kissed his cheek.
"Can you help me, daddy?" He asked quietly. Usually Amina got him here half an hour early to get him dressed and stretched for rehearsals.
"How does mama stretch you?"
"My legs."
"Dad, please get out of my studio."
"Where am I supposed to go?"
"In the room back there." She pointed to the double sided mirror.
"João, you need help stretching?"
"No"
"Yes you do. Go ahead and split. . . All the way"
"I can't" She began pushing his thighs down making him whine in discomfort.
"Quiet!"
His eyes began to tear up. His instructor thought he was being dramatic because he's rather flexible but he had a game yesterday and his legs were really sore so it hurt, really bad.
"Split João"
"I can't! I'm sorry. I can't" He lowered his voice.
"Sit and open your legs as wide as you can."
João did as told and she pressed her knee into his back making him cry out.
“Do we all see what happens when we don't stretch?” the fellow six to seven year old dancers nodded feeling bad for João.
"What are you doing?" Jamie walked out of the room ignoring the warning from the other parents.
"Papa, it's okay"
