A few months later:

Amina came home, her house was spotless, dinner was on the stove and Amir was sitting with Jamie at the table doing his homework.

“Hey baby” Amina kissed Amir's forehead.

“Hi mommy, papa picked me up from school today.”

“Yeah?” Amir nodded with a smile but Jamie's smile was about ten times bigger. Amir introduced him to all his friends as his dad and not his mom's boyfriend. It meant a lot to him and he didn't want to fuck up.

“Hey babe” She leaned down pecking his lips as well.

“What's wrong?”

“Nothing.” She walked away going to her room. She closed the door, Jamie knew something wasn't right but wanted to give her space. He's learned that when she's going through things she needs time to herself. She'll come to him when she's ready.

“Is mommy okay?”

“I'm not sure, Mimmo.”

“Where's Joey?” Jamie thought about it. He didn't know. He stood up to ask Amina. When he got to her door she brushed past him.

“Where are you going?”

“Amina” He grabbed her arm before she could leave and she pushed him off of her without hesitation. Hearing the little scuffle Amir stood up.

“Is everything okay?”

“Everything's fine baby, sit and finish your homework.”

“Papa, is everything okay?”

“Everything is good, Mimmo. Don't worry.” Hearing from both of them he sat down working on his math homework.

“I'm sorry. I shouldn't have grabbed you but I'm worried, you got home late and now you're leaving. I'm sorry I grabbed you. I'm just worried. I'm not trying to be possessive or weird, I just want to know where you're going just in case anything happens.”

“It's okay. I'm going to the firm. I uh. I uh need to get some work done.”

“I told the boys we could have a movie night. Speaking of, Where's João?” She seemed to tense up at the question.

“With his godmother”

“Who?”

“my best friend”

“Okay, is he spending the night?”

“I don't know.”

“Are you sure you're okay?” He found her behavior quite alarming.

“Yes. I'll see you later. I love you. Kiss my baby goodnight if I'm not home too” She pecked his lips and got in her car.

“I guess it's just you and me tonight kiddo.”

“Does mommy not like me anymore, papa”

“Of course she likes you, she loves you. Why would you ask that?” Jamie asked the nine-year-old.

He shrugged

“I don't know.  She never wants to come to watch movies with us or help me with my homework. I love you papa but you're not very good at English.”

“You're right. But where I slack off mommy picks up and in the rare case that mama slacks off, I pick up.”

“I just wanted to have a movie night with my new family”

“And we can make that happen. Guess what, we don't have to watch a girly movie because Mama's not home and we don't have to watch a baby movie because Joey's not home. You and I can watch what you want to watch and have popcorn and ice cream and stuff.”

“No we can't. It's a school night and I'll get in trouble for eating Junk before dinner”

“Then we can eat dinner first”

“Can we eat now and I'll do my homework later with Mama?”

“Yeah, go wash your hands.”

Jamie got plates and bowls for himself and Amir. He put the side salad in the bowl and stuffed shells on the main plate.

“Can we have juice for dinner, papa?”

“No, water.” Amir frowned. He could never have juice at dinner time. His dad let him.

“Why not?”

“It's too sweet. When your drink is sweet it affects your palate, you can't enjoy your food properly. Water also helps you digest your food better.”

“Okay”

“Well, does Mama let you drink juice for dinner?” Jamie asked not wanting to come in and dictate how everything goes and Amir shook his head honestly.

“Okay then no, we'll have some water and maybe I can make you some Italian hot chocolate”

“Are you Italian, papa?” Jamie nodded, sitting across from Amir.

“But you speak English and sound American”

“I was born in Italy, my first language is Italian but I moved to New York when I was around your age or maybe a little older. I think I was eleven. I had to take ESL classes in school because English is my second language. Kids used to make fun of my accent so I took separate classes so I could sound like all the other kids.

“I used to get bullied a lot at my old school”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Well, they just made fun of my clothes and sneakers because my dad didn't have a lot of money.”

“That's not nice. I was really poor growing up too. I used to get bullied being”

“But you're not black” Jamie chuckled.  He wondered what they were teaching this kid.

“Correct. I'm not black, black people aren't the only poor people, who told you that?”

“My old dad.”

“Want to hear a story?” Amir nodded, stuffing his face with the pasta.

“One time I begged my dad for a pair of Jordan's. I've never seen sneakers like them and when I was younger they were super popular. If you had Jordan's you were cool. I begged and begged and then I got a pair. I was so excited. I wore them to school and those kids tore me apart. They stole my shoes and cut them up.  Turns out they were fake, he had a ball in each hand”

“More like a cheerleader than a basketball player” Amir teased.

“Yeah, I never wore another pair of ‘Jordan's’ since that day. I got beat up real bad.”

“You know,  I didn't know white people could be poor.”

“Anyone can be poor. I just think
some groups of people are more likely to be impoverished.”

“We're not poor right?”

“No, thanks to mama. We're middle class I think. She has a really good job.”

“So now we're better than the poor people.”

“No, we're not better than anyone. That's not nice.”

While Amir and Jamie spoke and ate Amina was starting to freak out.

“Did you bring him to the office?” Sonsini, her boss, asked and she shook her head.

“I don't know when they took him, I rushed out this morning. Guys please, I need to find him.”

“I've got people in the department. They can send out units to help find him.”

“Go home. We'll update you, keep your phone on and charged.”
