Amina sat in her bright living room, a warm cup of Chai in her hand. Tears rolling down her cheeks as she finally accepted that she would be spending her third Christmas and birthday alone. Kenya’s borders were closed so she couldn't go home, her best friend went to her girlfriend's parents house and her boyfriend was still locked up. She didn't ask for much. This has been the best and worst year of her life and she was about to enter the next one all alone.

Early this year started off so well, it looked so promising. She got promoted to Senior associate. She was told that she was on track to becoming a partner thanks to the high profile cases she's been taking on. She was also approved to become a foster parent. She tried her best to be patient when waiting for the process but she wasn't called back. She figured if she forgot about it, it'll come to her. It didn't. She lost her first case in all her years of practicing law and her client keyed her car they broke all her windows. All her possessions were stolen. For safety purposes her firm put her in a high security apartment complex. She thought that this was why her name wouldn't move up in the list but then she had a social worker visit. She told her that she should be expecting a child before December Third. It's now the twenty-fourth and this kid never came. Now, everyone being absent for her birthday and Christmas was just the final straw.

She's been crying her eyes out for sometime now. She really wanted her boyfriend to hold her because she knew if he wasn't in prison he'd be here with her. She sat by her phone all night expecting a call and it never came. She put on the grinch and cuddled into the teddy bear Jamie got her. Halfway into the movie she fell asleep, candles still burning and Christmas lights still flashing.

The next morning, she woke up with a crazy headache. She popped a pain killer and began straightening back up. It was Christmas day but It definitely didn't feel like it. She packed a small travel bag and showered before dressing in many warm layers. Since he couldn't come to her. She was going to go to him. At first she refused the idea of going to visit him in prison. She hated it but she hated being alone more.

She drove the hour and a half to the prison and waited in her car until the line went down some. It was wrapped around the courtyard full of the family of inmates. When there was only a few people outside she got out and walked over to the doors. She didn't bring anything with her as she didn't want to have to have bags inspected or left with guards.

She felt bad seeing all the kids in the visiting room looking bored out of their minds. She thought this would be different. Like plexiglass and phones on the wall. Nonetheless she walked around looking for her boyfriend.

“Yeah, Jamieson Giordano.”

“He's not out here. I can send someone to get him”

“Please” The C.O nodded, asking a co-worker to go grab him. A Lot of the inmates who weren't expecting visitors stayed in their cells and bunks. She sat down and waited patiently. She prayed that Jamie got his shit together because she would never ever bring her children to sit in a room on Christmas day. Ever. Ten minutes turned into two hours and she started to get impatient. She checked her watch, it was already ten o clock. She left home at five.

“She's right there” the CO pointed at Amina and she looked up. She stood up when Jamie walked over to her. She broke down almost immediately. This was all she wanted, it was a shame she had to do all of this for it.

“Don't cry, baby.” He held her, also taking in the warm embrace. He doesn't remember the last time he's been hugged.

“Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas” He kissed her forehead, wiping her tears with a smile.

“No one came” she held the back of his jumpsuit in her fists as she hugged him tighter.

“I'm so sorry.” After a while they were told to separate and they sat at a table. Jamie put his hand on the table for her to hold.
