(F/N) sat on a couch in one of the many Joui hideouts, face buried in the latest volume of her favorite manga. The other rebels milled around, giving her a wide birth, and only stealing the occasional glance in her direction. One tried to strike up a conversation, but a dismissive hand wave was enough to send him packing. All in all, it was a peaceful afternoon.
Too peaceful.
(F/N) frowned, nails digging into the pages of her book. In the distance, the clock ticked away. It was four PM now—much too late.
Heaving a sigh, she shut her book, and stalked down the hall. All the nearby rebels fled, parting like the red sea as she strode to the door.
"Hey, you," she muttered to the guard. "Has Kotarou gotten back yet?"
The man jumped. "N—no, ma'am!" He glanced at the door. "It is kind of strange, though...he should've been back hours ago..."
(F/N) frowned, causing the guard to flinch. Something was wrong. Katsura had only gone to see Sakamoto. He shouldn't have been gone so long. Maybe he'd gotten captured by the Shinsengumi again, or maybe Sakamoto had done something stupid. Or maybe he'd just gotten distracted and completely forgotten to come home. Yeah, that seemed likely. After all, he was her boyfriend, and she loved him very much, but he was also a complete and total idiot.
She sighed, and returned to her seat. It was nothing to worry about, she told herself. She'd give it a little more time before panicking.
Despite this decision, however, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
An hour later, and she was scowling at the clock, arms crossed. By that time, she was considering sending out a search party, but before she could give the order, the door flew open, and a familiar voice called out.
"(F/N)-chan, I'm home!"
"Kotarou?"
(F/N) leapt to her feet, and threw her arms around his neck, reveling in the feeling of him safe and alive. Before she could truly bask in the joy, however, she noticed something odd.
A strange...penguin...duck...thing standing behind him.
"(F/N)-chan?" Katsura said. "That's an energetic greeting. Is something wrong?"
"Katsura..." she muttered, drawing away. "What...the hell...is that?"
Katsura glanced over his shoulder. "What's what?"
"That."
(F/N) pointed, and he looked over his shoulder again. One, two, three seconds passed, and Katsura burst out laughing.
"Oh, you mean Elizabeth! He's our new pet!"
"'Our?'"
"Sakamoto-dono gave him to me! Isn't he adorable?"
Katsura pushed the penguin-duck-thing towards her, and it made some sort of weird squishing noise. Was there a hairy leg sticking out of it?
"Um...Katsura..." She winced. "I don't think..."
Katsura stared at her. "What is it? Is something wrong?"
(F/N) hesitated. Yup, that was definitely a human leg sticking out the bottom.
(F/) gritted her teeth. This was ridiculous. That thing was not cute. She did not want it in her home, and he definitely should have consulted her before agreeing to take it home. She turned to him, breathing in deep, preparing to tell him to read him the riot act the same way she did when her henchman got her the wrong food at the ramen place.
