Okita Sougo had never truly liked a girl. Sure, he liked to flirt, but a serious relationship wasn't something that interested him—at least, not until he met her.

It was a sunny day at the park, and Okita was stalking the paths, hoping to run into China so he could give her his latest Tabasco-laced pastry. It didn't take him long to find his favorite bench, only to find a strange woman sitting there, legs stretched across the seat, back against the armrest. Okita frowned, and sauntered over, crossing his arms.

"Oi, lady, scoot. That's my seat."

The woman didn't respond, just flipped the page of her book, and Okita scowled.

"Hey, are you listening? That's my seat. Move."

Nothing. She remained glued to her book, eyes scanning the page with the intensity of a predator stalking its prey. Annoyed, Okita reached out, and snatched it out of her hands.

"Hey—"

Before he could finish the sentence, she snapped into motion, spinning around, and grabbing the book out of his hands. Her legs left the seat, and he took the opportunity to take it from her, earning a glare.

"Hey, what are you—"

She stopped mid-sentence. For a long moment, she stared at him, eyes wide. He wondered what exactly this annoying bookworm could have to say to him, and when she finally spoke, they weren't the words he expected to hear.

"You're Okita Sougo."

He raised an eyebrow.

"That's right. You heard of me?"

"We knew each other back in temple school," she said, "back before my family moved back to Edo. Don't you remember? I used to stay over at your house, and your sister would make those nice cookies..."

"Huh?" Okita thought back, and a blurry memory reached the forefront of his mind. "...(F/N)-chan, right?"

"That's right." She flashed a smile. Then her hand came to her mouth, and she held back a chuckle. "I saw you on the news a couple of weeks ago," she said. "You tried to blow off Hijikata Toushirou's head with a bazooka. I can't blame you, you know. That guy's an asshole."

He tilted his head. "You've met him before?"

"Oh, yeah. He used to visit my parents' restaurant all the time. Always ate our entire mayo stock. It would cause quite a crisis, the bastard. Good luck trying to kill him, by the way. I'm rooting for you."

With that, she turned back to her book, fading away into whatever fantasy land she'd been visiting before, but Okita found he couldn't take his eyes off her. He didn't know why, but this girl intrigued him somehow.

He couldn't wait to see her again.

A few days later, he returned to the same bench at the same time. Sure enough, there she was, nose in a book. The wind blew in her (H/C) hair, and Okita couldn't help but think she looked rather pretty like that.

The space next to her was open that day, and Okita took a seat. She didn't move, didn't twitch, didn't even look up, and he frowned.

"Hey," he said.

She didn't respond. Just turned the page, and he scowled.

"Hey! I'm tryin' to talk to you."

No answer. That was strange. She'd been so friendly yesterday. Had something changed? For whatever reason, this change annoyed him.
