It was a beautiful day when (F/N) walked into the Shinsengumi compound. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the gorillas were happily prancing around, pretending to be Shinsengumi commanders.
"Ah, (F/N)-chan!" Kondo said, greeting her with a grin as he always did. "Have you come to bail out your boss?"
"I hadn't even realized Gin-chan had been arrested," she replied, giving him a cordial smile. "I actually came here to see Toushi. Do you know if he's in right now?"
"Yes, actually, he is." Kondo grinned. "You know, you've been coming by so often lately, we're waiting for some good news."
(F/N) smiled. "Is that so? Well, if you don't mind, I'm going to pay a visit to my best friend."
With that, she left Kondo behind, and continued down the hall until she reached a familiar door. She gave it a knock, and, hearing a gruff 'come in,' stepped into Hijikata Toushirou's office.
He sat there as he always did, stooped over his desk, a cigarette smoking in his mouth. (F/N) paused a moment to admire him, leaning back against the wall with her arms crossed over his chest. After a moment, Hijikata looked up, and that's when she sprang the question.
"Why haven't you told them we're engaged?"
Hijikata stared at her, then ran a hand through his hair, turning back to his work to hide his face.
"I'm sorry," he muttered, "there just hasn't been a good time."
(F/N) frowned. She and Hijikata had been together for several years at that point. At first, he insisted on keeping their relationship a secret—for her safety, he said. Wouldn't want Joui rebels going after her. Then he decided he'd at least tell the Shinsengumi. Someday. He promised.
Then they got engaged, and she told him he had to tell them. What, were they going to be married and still living in separate houses? Again, he promised he'd tell them. Someday. Definitely.
It was now six months into their engagement, and he still had yet to tell.
"Toushi," (F/N) said, taking a seat on the opposite end of his desk, "tell them. Now."
"I'll get to it!" he insisted. "Just...give me a bit of time..."
"'A bit of time?'" she echoed. "You've been saying that for three years, Toushi!"
"And what about you?" he muttered, glaring up at her with narrowed eyes. "Have you told your family?"
(F/N) flinched.
"Well...you know how the Yorozuya are. Always in life-or-death situations, no time..."
"You're just as bad as me!"
He leapt to his feet, slamming his hands against the desk, and (F/N) flinched.
"You—you're the one who insisted we keep it a secret in the first place!" she protested. "It's too awkward to tell them now!"
"Exactly!" Hijikata snapped. "How am I supposed to tell them we've been together for three years? It's too late now. Much too late!"
They stared at each other for a long moment, and Hijikata sighed.
"That's not the real reason, is it?" he asked.
She shook her head. "No. It isn't for you, either, is it?"
"No. Look, I don't want to fight. Let's tell each other the real reason we haven't told anyone on the count of three, okay?"
She nodded. "Okay."
