Y/n
It was 5pm. That day had consisted of me and Peter pretty much just gaining each other's trust. I don't want to admit it, but it was fun. We did a trust fall, and he was surprisingly strong, as he picked me up and carried me to the other side of the room. I had to push down the weird fluttery feeling welling in my stomach. No y/n! You can't like him! He's just here until you take down HYDRA! I knew this of course, but he was genuinely... quite fit."Have you got to go to work now?" Peter asked as I put my shoes on.
"Yeah, I'll be back by 8," I replied.
"Could I... maybe come with you?" he asked.
I felt my cheeks grow hot. I turned away. Damn it y/n!
"S-sure," I stuttered, and he quickly went to get his shoes. "I only work at a corner shop by the way, so nothing interesting!"
"That's fine!"
I secretly liked the idea of having him around on my usually quiet shift. I put my bag on over the top of my hoodie and put my purse and phone in. Anything food or drink related I could get from the shop. Peter reappeared when he'd put his shoes on, so we left. It was getting darker outside, and my breath was turning into steam. We walked quickly down the road, alert.
"Why are we walking so fast?" Peter asked, clearly struggling to keep up."Do you want anyone to notice us?" I asked.
"No, but going at this speed people will!" Peter replied.
"Maybe, but if you keep your head down, our identities remain secret.
I heard Peter sigh next to me, and in a few minutes, we'd reached the shop. I went in, Peter behind me.
"Ahh! Y/n!" the man behind the counter called.
"Hey Mr Vishi," I greeted, walking upto the counter. "You don't mind if my friend keeps me company?"
The man shook his head.
"Of course not, he can just sit and talk to you. It's quiet today."
I thanked Mr Vishi and left Peter stood awkwardly in the middle of the shop, before disappearing behind a plastic sheet covering a doorway behind the counter. I took off my bag and coat off before hanging them on a hook, then grabbed my lanyard and put it around my neck. I re-emerged to see Peter talking to Mr Vishi.
"Friends already?" I asked, smirking, as I went over to the coffee machine.
"He's very interesting," Mr Vishi said, coming over to me. "Anyways, I'm off for the night. Lock up as usual at the end of the shift."
I nodded, putting in a new bag of coffee grounds.
"Peter, want a coffee?" I asked, briefly glancing at him.
"Are you allowed?" he asked.
I shrugged. I didn't actually know. Mr Vishi had always told me I could have a free coffee to keep me going, but he'd never mentioned about friends. I made Peter a coffee anyway, and I said goodbye to Mr Vishi as he left. The shop became silent, apart from the whirring of the coffee machine and me grabbing cups and lids. Peter sat on a stood beside the counter.
"What exactly do you do here?" he asked as I passed him the coffee.
"Oh, I just serve people, then lock up at the end of my shift, which is 8o'clock."
Me and Peter sat in silence for a few moments, sipping our coffees. My eyes wandered to his, but I quickly diverted them. They kept going back. No y/n! I don't know if he noticed, as he kept his head down looking at his dulled phone screen. I turned my attention to the man entering the shop. He wandered around for a minute or two, before putting a bottle of beer and a packet of cigarettes on the counter. I wasn't supposed to serve people this stuff, seeing as I'm only 16, but I didn't care. The man was clearly over 25.
"Is this all?" I asked him.
"Could I have a pickle sandwich?" he asked.
"Yeah, course," I replied, going around the back to where the fridges were.
I pulled out a pickle sandwich and went back round, before placing it on the counter.
"That'll be $7.35 please," I said.
The man put $10 on the counter, before grabbing his stuff.
"Change?" I asked.
"Nah, keep it for yourself kid," he said, before leaving, coughing.
I shrugged and put it in the cash box, taking out the change and going to put it in my purse. Like I'd expected, the rest of the shift was incredibly quiet. Me and Peter ended up turning on a film when it got to 6 o'clock, only pausing it if someone came into the shop. I grabbed a sandwich, crisps and other snacks and we ended up eating them all whilst having our little movie night. Eventually, I felt comfortable enough to tell Peter something I thought I'd never tell him.
"You know when I said I was taken by HYDRA?" I began, not really realising I was beginning to talk.
"Hm?" Peter replied, his eyes glued on the computer screen as he ate M&Ms.
"Well, I was 9. My father had just died and we came back to the camp and we were being attacked," I said.
He looked up at me, the light from the computer reflected off his eyes. I could see concern in them. Damn it, why did you tell him? Should I trust him so much? I scratched my nose awkwardly. I felt myself becoming upset, but I couldn't cry. Not in a shop. Not on my shift. Definitely not in front of a guy I met yesterday. Suddenly, I felt his arm around me.
"Me and a few others, we- we ended up in cells. Nobody knew where we were, until an agent told us," my voice was starting to shake.
"Hey... it's okay..." Peter whispered comfortingly. "You don't have to tell me..."
But I felt like I had to get this off of my chest. I'd started, so I had to carry on.
"They tested on us, injected us with some sort of serum. It was like the super soldier one, but it enhanced Hybrids, not humans. All I remember was tests, experiments, injections... fighting... We were forced to fight each other sometimes. They brainwashed one of the older Hybrids they captured - his name was Leon. He was one of the strongest they had. I was their second strongest Hybrid. They forced us to fight, and because he was brainwashed, he nearly killed me. I was bleeding, barely strong enough to stand up, nevermind stop him killing me. His teeth were in my neck. The only way to stop him was what I dreaded doing. Only one of us was going to come out of that room alive. I was the one who came out of the room."
I felt emotion come off of Peter. He hugged me tightly, and I couldn't stop a few tears leaking out of my eyes. I didn't realise that all these years I just needed someone to talk to, someone who I hoped wouldn't judge me. Someone like Peter.
