~~~ A month later ~~~
A month had passed since the battle. Things had settled down. Natasha took a couple of weeks to fully recover, but she was now rearing to go on another mission. Clint and Wanda were fine, so were the injured Hybrids. Ben had been officially adopted by Gordon - one of the older Hybrids who hadn't attended the battle. Kat still had the motherly instinct to care for and protect Ben. Us Hybrids had built ourselves a little community. I lived in the compound almost permanently, with Peter whenever he stayed over. All the others lived in apartments and houses in the surrounding area. I'd been officially promoted to leader of the Hybrids. In the process, we'd changed a few rules, bending tradition to suit modern times.
"Alpha Roseblood, you may now take your place among the Alphas of past and present," Elder Phillip said, holding the ring made of twisted vines in his hand.
I stepped forward and held my hand out, taking a deep breath of the earthy, forest air. Elder Phillip slid the ring on my finger, saying, "You are now part of the Alphas, past and present. May the future be pleasant and prosperous!"
I nodded my head, a smile forming on my lips.
"Now, may the other step forward!" Elder Phillip called into the crowd of surrounding onlookers.
The ceremony was taking place in the woods. The Avengers and Hybrids had come to watch and pay their respects.
I looked into the crowd and my blue eyes locked onto the figure that anxiously stepped forwards. I saw Elder Phillip gesture for Peter to come towards us. He came over and stood facing me.
"As tradition once was, an Alpha could only lead with another Hybrid. However, these changing times have decreed that tradition must be rewritten. History cannot be changed, but the future can!" Elder Phillip began.
Peter took my hands and I gazed into his endlessly loving brown eyes. I got lost in them for a moment, but managed to hear what words the elder was speaking.
"Peter Parker, do you make the everlasting promise to support Alpha Roseblood in her leadership of the Hybrids?"
"Yes."
"Then let it be! Everybody, your new Alpha, Alpha Roseblood, and her partner, Peter Parker!"
There was cheering from the Avengers and howls of approval and joy from the Hybrids.
"Let your futures be bright and prosperous!" the Elder shouted over the noise.
Once the commotion had quietened down, I turned to face the crowd, still holding one of Peter's hands with one of my own.
"After the passing of the late Alphas, Alphess Roseblood and Alpha Thornsap, times were hard," I began, speaking only truth. "We struggled to live. We gripped onto survival with what little we had. But we were valiant. Although many were lost to the icy grips of death then the peaceful afterlife, many prospered. My experiences have shown that everyone can overcome anything. With the atrocities from HYDRA, rising pressure from society to stay hidden and incessant hunting, we were forced into the shadows. Forced to hide our true selves. I saw a glimmer of hope in a void that seemed endless. A glimmer of light in the void I was scared to jump into. My hesitation to jump caused suffering. When I saw what was happening, I knew I couldn't stand by and do nothing."
I looked around at everyone, taking in everyone's individual expressions. Many were proud, joyous or attentive.
"With the help of the Avengers and the Hybrids, we all succeeded. We prospered in a time when it seemed impossible to prosper in. I wish good health, prosperity and good luck to every person and Hybrid in this clearing!"
Another outbreak of howling and cheering erupted. This was it. I'd done it. I'd become what I was destined to be.
Today however, was a less joyous occasion. The bodies of those fallen had been laid by the lake beside the compound, their covered bodies adorned with sweet smelling plants and herbs. It was custom to let the body lie for a month so the spirits of the dead could descend and collect the newly fallen spirit from Earth. But now, it was time to bury the bodies. I zipped up my black dress as best as I could, then poked my head around the bathroom door. Peter was knotting his tie in front of my bedroom mirror.
"Hey Pete?" I asked.
"Yeah?" Peter replied, looking at me.
"Could you zip this up please?"
He nodded and came over to me. I turned around and let him pull up the zip, before I turned back around and he took my hands.
"You'll do great," he said, sincerity lacing his voice and present in his eyes.
I smiled softly, and he placed a kiss on my lips.
"Thanks Pete," I replied.
