Lorelei's POV:

I walk back into the house, my skin coated in a thin layer of sweat. I'd decided to procrastinate some of my duties and went swimming with a few of the hybrids that were hanging out at the house. There wasn't much else to do.

In a place where you're constantly stuck either at home or in downtown. It's nice to be in the woods. This isn't natural for wolves. Vampires don't really care where they set up shop. I go into the kitchen, grabbing a few bottles of water, as many as I can carry. The 6 of us move through the kitchen and into the living room, that was barely big enough to fit all of us.

It would be nice for us to have a place with enough space to be able to hang out (or better yet a place of our own with a little privacy ) but Nik has made it clear that he had no plans to leave Mystic Falls anytime soon. It wouldn't be like one of us would change his mind.

You may be wondering: why don't the wolves just leave if they're so miserable? Why don't I?

I got lucky when it comes to the relationship I have with Nik. The others were turned, and then compelled by him to obey. They had to do whatever they were told regardless of what it was. There was no choice, and I can only imagine what Nik was having them do. I've seen what he does to people in front of my very eyes. I can't imagine it's any more charming in the privacy of his own home. I wonder what the new resident of our seller did.

If I knew Nick, there were very few reasons as to why he would keep someone captive in his own home. One: Leverage. Two: Intel

If he were making more hybrids, he wouldn't be miserable right now and we would've heard about it, not necessarily through him, but Nik was very particular, and how he got his hybrids. First, he would go out into the woods, searching for werewolf packs. It wasn't all that hard when he could just threaten a witch to do the tedious work. Next he would capture, feed then kill them. They'd wake up, feed and he would immediately compel them, making sure that there was no way that he wasn't in control.

Suddenly, the door burst open and Nik comes in dragging a body behind him.

This can't be good.

He drops the motionless male onto the ground.

Turning to Ryan and Caleb, he orders them to bring this man to the cellar and to not let him out under any circumstances.

In an instant the mood of the room had changed, going from carefree to tense.

Ryan and Caleb bend down, scooping the man up under his armpit, hooking their arms with his and dragging him off.

Nik goes over to the table and pours himself a glass of bourbon as the rest of us stand there, waiting to see what would happen next.

Minutes tick by and he says nothing, taking his drink over to the corner of the room and sitting in a chair. He stares out the window as we all exchange glances.

Do we say something? Do we leave?

I wonder what's going on.

Zara shakes her head when I take a step towards me. Her eyes are wide with worry.

'Don't be stupid.' She mouths
'Well what do we do?' I mouth back

James gestures toward the door.

"Sarah and Will are dead." Nik says breaking the silence

I turn to face him then look back at Zara, my heart stabbed with pain for her.

Will was Zara's partner for 5 years.

Sarah, her best friend.

We'd all become friends after spending pretty much all of our time together since we met Nik. It was rough at first, most of us didn't get along, arguing amongst one another when Nik was out of earshot. Wolves kept in close quarters 24/7. Ugly combination.

Zara takes off out of the room and I follow.

"Zara I'm so sorry."

She's inconsolable, collapsing onto the ground.

I kneel down beside her when I hear footsteps behind me. I turn my head to see James standing there, looking just as lost as I feel.

Then just as suddenly as she fell apart, she stands back up and it's easy to see the murderous intent in her eyes. I stand up too and grab her arm before she can re-enter the room and try to kill Nik. Zara wouldn't win and she knows it but revenge trumps logic.

James blocks her as well, moving to stand in front of her.

"This would get you killed." James says

The glare Zara gives says it all.

She would give her last breath is only to get a drop of Nik's blood. It wouldn't ever be enough, of course, but it was as close to hurting an immortal being as you can get.

"No Zara. We've lost two friends today. I'm not losing another." I say looking from her to James

I nod to him and he briskly snaps her neck, scoops her up and we walk off.

Even two felt like too many...
