"Si Nan!" Yan Hao knocked on the window and asked loudly, "Are you available? Do you want to go for a walk?"
In the spacious central area of the rear factory building, Si Nan had found a whisk from somewhere and was quickly stirring a basin of dark, oily substance. The thick smell of kerosene permeated the surroundings. Upon hearing Yan Hao's words, he stopped and waved for Yan Hao to come in.
This was the first time an outsider had been allowed into his workshop, and Yan Hao couldn't help but feel surprised. "Are you...?"
Si Nan handed Yan Hao the whisk and iron basin, giving him a brief instruction, "Stir it vigorously."
Yan Hao was confused and had to stir the mixture in the basin vigorously for a while. His arms were so sore that he could barely lift them. Si Nan was finally satisfied and said, "You're done. Let's go out, but don't say anything."
"What is this?" Yan Hao asked.
"Black gunpowder."
Yan Hao, "..."
Yan Hao had initially wanted to ask Si Nan to go outside and discuss whether he wanted to join the Special Forces team on their mission to Military Region B. However, Si Nan seemed indifferent to his own whereabouts, so Yan Hao had to leave and discuss it with Zhou Rong.
On a clear autumn day, Si Nan spread the well-mixed black gunpowder in a shaded area of the factory, waiting for the kerosene to air dry naturally. Suddenly, he heard a series of light but urgent footsteps, so he leaned over to look out of the window at the back.
Behind the factory building was a quiet little road. Ten minutes to the east was a storage and treatment pool for anhydrous ammonia, while to the west, it led to the cafeteria's kitchen. A young woman in an apron was hurrying from the corner of the road. She looked a bit pale and anxious, and upon spotting Si Nan, her steps suddenly came to a halt.
"?" Si Nan stared at her and recognized her as Wu Xinyan.
Wu Xinyan rushed over and extended her hand to pull the window.
Perhaps Si Nan's comment that day when they first arrived at the fertilizer factory, "Six months, can't get rid of it," had left a deep impression on Wu Xinyan. She had never been fond of him and often went out of her way to avoid him. Si Nan didn't know what had happened, but she didn't seem like someone who had been bitten by zombies and turned into a threat to humans. Therefore, he opened the window from inside and pulled her in.
Wu Xinyan closed the window behind her and crouched on the ground. She pulled Si Nan down as well.
"Hush..." she whispered softly.
Si Nan frowned as he heard footsteps approaching the window from outside the road. This time the footsteps were much heavier, and a man with a rough voice exclaimed, "Hey! She was here just now, where did she go?"
Another man with an accent said, "What is this place?" They continued walking closer, peering into the factory building through the window. They didn't notice Si Nan and Wu Xinyan hiding in the shadows on the windowsill and casually said, "No one's here."
"Damn, that girl ran fast."
"You should relax too. Mr. Feng said not to touch these people. Have you forgotten?"
These were two bodyguards under Feng Wentai. Si Nan's eyes darkened.
The two of them chatted for a while, probably lighting cigarettes, and the man who had spoken first earlier complained, "I wanted to date her, what's the problem? I can't do this, can't do that. Mr. Feng is really concerned about these guys."
