The sewer was filled with dead silence, only the sound of dripping water droplets, echoing faintly.

Si Nan tilted his head slightly.

Separated by a distance of over ten meters, Zhou Rong could see shadows outlining deep contours on the edge of his cheek, from his straight nose to his lips, and his chin, resembling a silhouette.

"Go ahead," he suddenly said, "I'll return to the ground entrance and drive the old car back."

Before Zhou Rong could persuade him, he heard the iron door clang shut, followed by the sound of it being locked.

Zhou Rong was furious and rushed over, grabbing the iron bars, "Si Nan!"

With a few loud bangs, the massive noise of the iron door shaking had not yet subsided, but Si Nan had already stepped on the water for several meters and said coldly, "What are you doing?"

"It's too dangerous for you alone. Come with us!"

"No need to worry about me!"

Zhou Rong looked at his bloodstained and cold, handsome face, which was impossible to understand.

He had come in leaning close to Zhou Rong's ear, cried out as soon as he saw him at the bottom of the pit, and ragged madly upon seeing Zhang Yingjie's body being taken away. But suddenly, he had reverted to the way they were when they first met in T City, distant, aloof, even wary, keeping a distance of over ten meters at all times.

It was as if, after experiencing life and death, all of his vivid and intense emotions had disappeared completely, leaving him clean and retreating into an invisible, icy shell.

Si Nan's unusual guardedness towards Alphas had made Zhou Rong come up with some very bad guesses, but he didn't want to dwell on it. He took a deep breath and said, "Comrade Xiao Si Nan, it will take at least two hours to get from here to the entrance. You're alone and unarmed..."

Si Nan reached out his hand, "Give it to me."

"?"

"The gun, and the car keys."

"You!" Zhou Rong pointed at him angrily through the bars, "You've gone too far! You don't even trust your comrades?!"

"Not giving it to me?" Si Nan said coldly and turned to leave.

Zhou Rong immediately took off the Uzi Micro SMG, reached for the car keys of the old bio-vehicle they had driven into B City from his back waist, and threw them over, "Come over!"

Si Nan, however, would not accept a refusal, "Throw it over."

Time was passing by, and Si Nan's attitude was as unyielding as ever. After pondering for a moment, Zhou Rong, at a loss for what to do, reluctantly threw the car keys and the Uzi over the bars.

He hesitated for a moment, still worried. He added, "The base's drainage system is very complicated, and there may still be zombie gorillas near Area E. Wait here. I'll go get a signal flare. If you're in danger, shoot it immediately..."

Before he could finish his sentence, Si Nan picked up the car keys and the submachine gun, turned, and walked away. Zhou Rong immediately stopped, stunned, and gasped, "Hey! Where are you going?!"

Si Nan didn't look back, saying calmly, "Fertilizer factory."

Zhou Rong heard the footsteps getting farther and farther away in the tunnel and finally breathed a sigh of relief. The distance between people was indeed like this: endless pursuit from one side only led to a more urgent and wary retreat from the other.
