Riley sat in the rocking chair, gently rocking herself back and forth as she held her little girl against her chest. She was sitting in the baby's room, which turned out was the reason for Jay to get to the hospital late when she gave birth a little over a month ago. He had been working on it with Adam and Kevin, making it the room she envisioned from the start. She had no clue how he even knew, but she was so grateful that he did.
Jay ran out a few minutes ago to run some must needed errands. So Riley was left alone with their daughter, who she really couldn't get enough of. Adjusting to their new life as parents hadn't been easy but they worked it how quite well. It helped a lot that they were both given 12 weeks of paid leave to take care of their daughter and that they had a lot of help from their friends as well as Jay's brother.
As she read the same story out loud for what must have been the hundredth time, just because she loved it so much, someone walked in the apartment. "Who's there?" Riley called out, not recalling inviting anyone over.
"Your favorite Intelligence cop!"
"Oh, hi Adam!" She jokingly answered, obviously having recognised the voice. Atwater appeared around the corner, walking in the nursery with a hand over his heart.
"Now, that hurt." Riley laughed at Kevin's word, waving him over. He sat on the sofa chair next to her, getting comfortable as he turned to glance at her. "How's family life these days?"
"It's going pretty well, I think." She nodded her head as she glanced down at the small girl in her arms. "How's Vanessa and Jordan?"
"They're good, yeah." He crossed his arms over his chest, obviously having something in mind but unsure how to approach it.
Hailey had filled Riley in on the office gossip, so she was well aware of everything Kevin was currently going through. There was a lot of chatter around the current case, especially since Doyle's death.
"How's everything going at work?" Riley asked, knowing that Atwater most likely wanted to talk through it with her. He usually texted or called to ask for news, never really popped by. So she knew there was more to it.
He huffed, throwing his head back. "Not too good. I'm stuck between speaking up or not speaking up, you know?"
Riley nodded, understanding what he meant. She wasn't in his place but she couldn't even imagine how thorn he must feel about it all. "What's making you unsure?"
Kevin listed a small list of pros and cons, mentioning that he talked to Ray Price - who advised him no to speak up, mostly for the benefit of his own family. But Kevin said that he wasn't sure if he wanted to follow Ray's advice because he kept thinking about the black family who wrongfully lost their father because of Doyle. Riley completely understood where he was coming from, so she let him talk and took in all of his thought to make up her own mind.
"You know what, Kev?" Riley spoke up, gently shifting the baby in her arms to prevent them from getting numb. "I think you should do what I know your heart is telling you to do. But, if you really do want my opinion, I think everyone - no matter the skin color or their job - should be held accountable for their crimes. The badge on our chest," She pointed at the place where her badge usually rested, "That thing they stick on our chest right out of the academy, that we wear for the rest of our career - it doesn't give us the right to take other people's life and get away with it."
