Alex and I have been in and out of the ice more times than I can count. Each thaw felt shorter, each freeze longer. By our calculations, if time even means anything anymore, I'd be ninety-six. He'd be ninety-nine.
The serum never worked on Alexander. After years of trying, they finally gave up- but they didn't give up on us. They trained us instead. Every strike, every breath, every scar, until we could take down twenty men without breaking a sweat.
That was our worth now. Weapons disguised as children.
"Lizzieeeee" alex's voice broke through the darkness, poking me awake.
"What?" I mumbled, half asleep.
"Happy birthday!" He said with a grin
I gave him a small, tired smile. "Thank you" I said
His smile faltered. "What's wrong? You're ten now. You should be happy" he said
"Happy about what?" I snapped before I could stop myself. That I get to spend another year trapped in this place?" I say
He looked down, then nodded quietly. "I'm sorry" he said
I sighed, softening my tone. "No. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have-" I start
"It's okay" he said gently. "I wish there was something I could do" he said
"You've already done enough. You're always with me" I said, smiling weakly.
He smiled back. "Always" he said
The door screeched open. "You both have a mission today" a guard barked.
They dragged us down the hall and into a waiting helicopter.
"What's the mission?" I asked
"You're to infiltrate a facility S.H.I.E.L.D, retrieve file H-08, and return. Nothing more" he said
"What's S.H.I.E.L.D? " I ask
He ignored the question. "We'll get in you. After that, you're on your own." He said
By nightfall, we were inside. The building was sleek, bright, and cold- so different from hydras walls, yet somehow just as suffocating.
I slipped into a small office and started hacking the nearest computer. "Come on, come on- hurry up" I mutter as the progress bar crawled forward.
"You think you could move any faster?" Alex whispered beside me.
"Tell that to the computer!" I hissed back
He smirked. "Some birthday" he said
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, best one yet" I say
The download hit 100%. I yanked the flash drive and pocketed it.
