I tried to convince Steve to let me go with him, but he shut the door on me and left. Now I've been stuck in my room all day with nothing to do and too much time to think.
So I decided the best thing was a walk- to get my head out of the loop it had been stuck in. I grabbed my jacket and headed down the corridor, and that's when I heard Wanda and vision talking.
"Hey, I'm going to go on a walk to clear my mind" I called
"Well I need to get some seasoning for the soup- you can come with me if you want" Wanda said
"Yeah, sure" I shrugged.
We started out the door, and vision stepped in front of us like a polite, immovable statue.
"Uh, vision? What are you doing?" I asked.
"I don't think we really need the seasoning. We could use some stuff we have here" he said
"Vision we will be right back, it's okay." Wanda tried, and we went to walk again, but he stopped us.
"Vis, can you move out of the way?" Wanda asked, voice soft.
"I'm afraid I can't do that" he replied.
"Vision. Why aren't you letting us leave?" I tilted my head, annoyed.
Before he could answer, something went off outside. Vision flew to the window immediately, scanning. Wanda and I moved up beside him.
"What is it?" Wanda asked
"Stay here, please." He said, then flew out.
A presence slid behind me- familiar and fast. I whipped around and my hand blurred. I sent a knife in a thread of blue energy straight for the intruders face. Wanda has her powers ready too. The knife stopped an inch from Clint's nose.
"Guess I shoulda knocked." He said, sliding the knife away from his face.
"Oh my god!" Wanda breathed
"What are you doing here?" I asked, hugging him quick because I couldn't help it.
"Disappointing my kids." He said "I'm supposed to go water-skiing. Cap needs our help. Come on." He started to leave.
"Clint!" Visions voice snapped.
"You should not be here." He said
"Really? I retire for, what, like five minutes, and it all goes to shit." Clint said
"Please consider the consequences of your actions." Vision replied.
Not even a second later.
"Okay, they're considered." Clint shrug
Vision stepped forward- and then his systems sparked. Clint had an arrow lodged somewhere with an electrical truck he'd hidden.
"Okay, we gotta go." Clint said, jogging off.
"It's this way." He added, but wanda and I hesitated.
"I've caused enough problems, Clint" I said.
Clint jogged back, grabbing my shoulders, and looked into my eyes like he always did when he wanted someone pulled together. "You gotta help me, Elizabeth. Look- you wanna mope, you can go to high school. You wanna make amends- you get off your ass." He said
He was serious and ridiculous at the same time.
Vision started to get up. "Shit." Clint swore.
They started to fight. Vision moved like a machine and Clint moved like a hurricane. It was obvious Clint was losing.
Vision threw him down. "I knew I should've stretched." Clint muttered, then got back up to fight.
"Wanda, we have to help him" I said into her head.
"I can't. I can't do that to vision" she answered honestly.
I looked at her. "But I can" I say. She just looked at me then nodded.
"Clint, let me help" I said into his mind.
"Took you long enough" he muttered.
"You can't overpower me Clint." Vision said, voice even.
"I know I can't. But she can." He nodded toward me.
"Vision." I said, stepping forward with a small ball of blue light resting in my palms, humming like held breath. "That's enough. Let him go. We're leaving." I said
"I can't let you." Vision replied.
I did what I do. I grabbed him with my powers, releasing Clint from his grip. I surrounded him with my blue energy, pushing him into the floor as it cracked.
"If you do this.. they will never stop being afraid of you." Vision warned.
"I can't control their fear, only my own." I said. I stepped closer and pushed down harder. His body fell through, like the concrete floor was paper.
Clint and Wanda slid to my side, breathless and gaining like idiots. "Oh." Clint said, proud.
"Come on. We got one more stop." He added, jogging away.
We fell into an easy rhythm as we walked. "So...how's the family?" I asked, breaking the gap of silence.
"The family's never been better" he said and smiled like it wasn't the most dangerous lie in the world.
"How's everything been for you guys?" He asked
"Well, you know- went from shit, to good, back to shit" I shrugged.
"What she said" Wanda agreed.
"I can relate to that" Clint laughed.
"Can we get some food?" I asked
"Liz you literally just ate" Wanda said
"First off, that doesn't even matter. Second- why did you answer 'can we get some food?' When Clint is the one driving the car?" I asked, exasperated.
I just stared at Clint.
"What?" He asked.
"That was your cue to say 'yes we can get some food'" I told him.
"I don't remember you talking this much" he said
"Should've done your research before asking me to come along" I said, shrugging.
A beat of silence.
"Yes we can get some food" he said
"Yes! Let's go!" I yelled, pumping my fists in the air.
"Plus the newbie will probably be hunger" he added.
"Yeah, that leads to another question" I said "Who is this guy we're getting?" I ask
"Honestly don't really know." Clint admitted. "Only thing I heard is that he stole something from the compound Sam with supposed to be at, for a good reason by the way. They started fighting and Sam lost" he laughed.
"No way! He did?! Oh I'm so going to use that against him" I said, already planning petty revenge.
Clint grinned. Wanda rolled her eyes. But for the first time in a long while, the noise of the world didn't feel like it was pressing in on me. It felt like a walk with friends.
