I take the long way back to the hotel- just needing a second to breathe. The night air is cold against my skin, grounding, but it doesn't make the guilt fade. Peter handing Beck those glasses keeps replaying in my head. Tony's glasses.
When I finally step inside the hotel, MJ rushes toward me. "Bella! Are you okay? Where were you?" She asked
I blinked, realizing I completely forgot the battle was tonight.
"Oh, yeah, I'm fine." I say, forcing a casual smile. "I kinda snuck out to join the party. Had to take the long way back because of all the destruction" I said
"Oh thank God" she breathes out, wrapping me in a hug. "you scared me" she said
"Yeah. I just hope now we can just enjoy the trip" I said
"Bella." She says, hesitating. "The trips over" she said
"What?" I ask
"There's monsters literally coming out of the ground everywhere we go. Of course our parents want us home." She said
"Please don't put me on hold." Mr. Harrington mutters into his phone nearby. Then he spots us. "Oh, Peter, Bella. You're not dead. Oh my God. Yes, good. Stay here. Don't die." He turns to Ned. "Put some clothes on. We're booking flights." He said
"We came for science, we're living because of witches. Welcome to the new Dark Ages." Mr. Dell mumbles.
MJ sighs "We're going home in the morning" she said
"Hey, can you guys keep it down? I'm live-streaming." Flash says, phone in hand.
Of course he is.
Then Peter walks up to me.
"I can't believe we're going home" I said quietly.
"Yeah...." Peter said.
I gave him a small smile, then started walking back to my room. But Peter called out. "Hey, wait- Bella!" He said
I turn around.
"Well, look" he said nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. "im not ready for this trip to be over yet, and I kind of want to do something fun that's not on the itinerary or planned or with Mr. Harrington. Like...just the two of us" he said
A real smile tugs at my lips. "Yeah. That sounds great" I said
"Awesome! I'll see you outside in ten minutes" he beamed.
"I'll meet you outside in five" I say, walking off before he can see the smile I can't hide.
When I walk into my room, the air feels off- too still. Someone's here. I round the corner, half expecting fury.
Instead, it's MJ.
"Uh...MJ, what are you doing?" I ask carefully.
"What are you hiding, Bella?" she says, eyes sharp. "You disappeared during the opera. You disappeared during the water monster attack. You're hiding something" she said
