"What the fuck?!" I yell, the sound swallowed by the roar of honking cars and shouting voices.
"That's right, folks. Two seventeen-year-olds high school delinquents" Jameson's voice booms from the billboard.
The air shifts. People all around us turn, staring. Phones come out- dozens of them- flashing lights and camera lenses pointed straight at us.
"Are you dating Spider-Man?!" Someone shouts.
"Are you actually seventeen?!" Another yells
The noise builds- questions, accusations, chaos- and it's getting harder to breathe.
"The vile vigilante Spider-Man and the villain Sapphire" Jameson continues, his voice like oil.
Someone grabs my arm. Another shoves a phone in my face. Peter drops down from the light post instantly, putting himself between me and the crowd.
"Yo- it's him." Someone yells
"Please, don't touch her, sir" Peter says quickly, raising a hand.
"You're just a kid?" The man asks
"You murdered Mysterio!" A woman screams at him.
"And you fought someone who was just trying to help! You're a monster!" Another spits at me.
"No-" we both start, but no one listens.
"Come on, kid, let me see your face!" The same woman yells, reaching for Peter's mask.
I react without thinking, using my powers to push her hand back.
"She shoved me! Sapphire shoved me with her powers!" She screams, feeding the fire.
"Come on" peter said, grabbing my hand. We launch upward, the crowds outrage echoing below.
Jamesons voice followed us, loud and venomous through the city's screens. "All this time people looked up to these kids and called them heroes. Well, I'll tell you what I call them- public enemy number one." He said
"Where do we go?!" Peter shouts over the wind.
"I don't know! Just- get out of here first!" I yell back.
We land on a tall bridge, heart racing. Peter's phone starts buzzing- it's Ned.
"Dude" Ned says "Dude" Peter replies. "Dude!" "Dude!" "Dude!" "Dude!"
"Dude!" I yell, getting his attention. "We need to go!" I say
Peter blinks at me, realizing how loud the helicopters have gotten. People on nearby balconies are filming us. We're everywhere.
"We should go, we should go!" Peter says, running over.
"Hell no- I'm flying" I said quickly.
"Yeah, yeah- good call" he said
He swings. I fly, and together we vanish into the skyline.
But it's no use. There are too many eyes, too many cameras.
We both take off swinging and flying away
"Peter, through the drains!" I shout, pointing.
"Good idea, good idea!" he says
We dive into the tunnels, shadows and echoes following us until the noise finally fades.
When we resurface, we're in a quiet alley.
"Your house?" Peter asks, panting.
"Uhh- no, we can't. Billy and Tommy were at the fight. If they find them, might take them away from Wanda. I can't let that happen" I said quickly.
"Okay, okay. Then we go to mine" he said, grabbing my hand again.
We crawl through Peter's window, hearts still pounding. He rips off his mask, pacing, muttering a thousand things at once.
"Peter" I say, placing my hands on his face. "Breathe" I said
He's about to when-
The door swings open.
"I didn't see anything." May says quickly, then turns around.
"This isn't what it looks like! No, no, no, May-" Peter stammers, chasing after her as she turns away.
"Practice safe- Oh! Elizabeth!" She says, immediately brightening and pulling me into a hug.
"Hi, may! I promise, that was not what it looked like" I said
"Oh, okay, okay- i trust you" she smiles
"What about me?" Peter mutters under his breath.
Then i notice happy, eyes red and puffy.
"Wait- have you been crying?" I ask
"We broke up" happy says
"What?" Peter blurts.
Before we can react, someone shouts from outside. "Hey Spider-Man! Sapphire!"
Peter slams the window shut, wincing.
"I didn't know you guys broke up. I thought you were in love." I said
"Can we talk about this in the kitchen?" Peter said, trying to divert their attention.
"I should probably leave" happy said
"I thought you guys were such a great couple." Peter said.
"You know. It's really about boundaries" may says.
Then- ding dong. The doorbell rings.
"I'll get it" I say, walking over.
I see a man standing there- and immediately close the door, locking it.
May and happy sit on the couch while Peter and I stand near the window.
"I didn't know you were so awkward about sex Peter." May says casually.
"This has nothing to do with sex!" Peter blurts.
The crowd outside gets louder- chants, car horns. I wave my hand, closing another window with my powers while Peter locks the last one.
"If you wanna go over it again. I mean- What's that sound?" Happy asked.
Then ignores it and continues. "I mean, I'm happy to rehash it if you want to." He adds.
"You take care of your side, I'll take care of mine" May says.
Both their phones buzz at once.
"What is up with this phone?" she mutters, picking it up.
I quickly flick my fingers, using my powers to lift both phones from their hands.
"Will you get off your phones for five minutes? I just wanna talk to you about your relationship, okay? Right, Elizabeth?" Peter said, breathless.
"Right" I mumble, distracted by the TV.
The building on the news looks familiar. Then I see the headline.
"Spider-Man and sapphires identity revealed."
"Peter?" May whispers, pointing at the screen. "Is that- Is that here?" She asks
Peter exhales, shoulders slumping, and walks to the window. He pulls it open again.
Outside, the streets are chaos- sirens, flashing lights, cameras, people yelling our names.
May gasp, covering her mouth. Happy just stares.
I glance at everyone, my stomach twisting.
"Everything will be fine.... right?" I ask, my voice smaller than I meant it to be.
