The lights died first.
One second, the compound hummed with power- the next, everything fell into darkness. Somewhere down the corridor, Klaue cursed under his breath. You could practically smell his fear.
He raised a pistol toward the doorway just as Pietro blurred forward, the gun empty in seconds.
Wanda and I stepped through the doorway- calm, silent, and glowing faintly blue and red in the flickering light.
"Yeah. The enhanced. Strucker's priced pupils." Klaue said slowly, his gaze darting between us.
He reached for a bowl of candy on his desk, holding it out as if that would make things normal. "Do you want a candy?" He asked
I titled my head. "Do we look like we're here for candy?" I asked
"Oh, sorry to hear about Strucker." He went on, his tone almost lazy. "But, then he knew what kind of world he was helping create. Human life, not a growth market." He said
We said nothing. Wanda's eyes glowed deeper crimson.
"You... you didn't know?" Klaue laughed. "Is this your first time intimidating someone? I'm afraid that I'm not that afraid." He asked
"Everybody's afraid of something." Wanda said softly.
"Cuttlefish." He replied immediately.
I blinked. "What?" I ask
"Deep sea fish." He said, waving his hands around. "They make lights, disco lights. Whoom, whoom, whoom! To hypnotize their prey, then whoom! I saw a documentary, it was terrifying." He said
Pietro grabbed a candy from the bowl and popped it into his mouth.
Klaue leaned closer, eyes shape now. "So if you're going to fiddle with my brain, and make me see a giant cuttlefish, then I know you don't do business, and I know you're not in charge, and I only deal with the man in charge." He said
The glass shattered before I could answer. Ultron came crashing through the window, landing like a thunderclap. Klaue tumbled down the stairs
"There is no 'man' in charge." Ultron said, voice metallic and calm. "Let's talk business." He said
He gestured to the crates. "Upon this rock I will build my church. Vibranium." He lifted a piece of gleaming metal, tossing it to pietro.
Klaue's greed flickered through his fear. "You know, it came at great personal cost. It's worth billions." He said
Ultron's head tilted. "Now, so are you." He said
"It's all under your dummy holdings? Finance is so weird. But as I always say, 'keep you friends rich and your enemies rich, and wait to find out which is which'." Ultron continued.
