Everyday has been the same for a year. We wake up to yelling. We're dragged to separate rooms. Tested on. Poked. Prodded. Tortured. Then dragged back to our cells again.

And every time we live through it- our parents get paid.

"Elizabeth. Alexander. Come with me. I have news"

The hydra leaders voice cuts through the silence like a blade.
Alexander and I rise without a word and follow him down the din hallway into his office.

"Sit"

We obey instantly.

He watches us for a long moment before speaking, his voice smooth and calm, which somehow makes it worse.
"As you know, every time you survive an experiment, your parents our rewarded. Correct?" He asks

"Yes, sir" we say together.

"Well" he says, leaning back in his chair.
"It seems your parents have....taken that generosity for granted. They've been stealing money from us. Thinking we wouldn't notice." He said

A cruel smile spread across his face.
"Unfortunately for them, Hydra knows everything" He said

My stomach twists.

"I have them in the room next door. Now as for you two- I'd like you both to kill them. Consider it the first step in your training" He said, eyes narrowing.

"Kill them?" Alexander asks, voice barely a whisper.

"Yes. And if you don't..." his grin widens.
"there will be consequences. Understood?" He asks

We exchange a look- fear, confusion, disbelief- and then nod.

"Good." He says, rising to his feet.
"Follow me" he says

He opens the door, leading us into another room.
Our parents are there- tied to chairs, bruised, terrified.

"What are they doing here?" Mama demands.

The leader laughs.
"They've come to return what has been giving to them." He says

He kneels in front of us, two guns in his hands.
"Kill them" he orders.

We don't move. We don't breathe.

"Go on" his voice drops low.
"Show me what you've learned" he says

We finally reach for the guns.
He puts me in front of Mama, and Alexander in front of Papa.

"Shoot them" he orders.

My hands shake. I can't even hold the gun steady.
We both raise them- slowly. Trembling.

But we don't shoot.
We can't.
