Going home

The days turned into weeks and I didn't feel myself mentally getting any better, even with my plane ticket back home booked, nothing felt right. My arms were littered with scars, as I was in a self-harm cycle that I thought I had broken months ago, I just blamed the scarring from the accident if anyone asked.

"I'm so proud of you, you got cleared to fly early. You worked for it," My grandma said as I packed my bag.

I did end up rebreaking my foot from moving around too much, but that was a minor injury that did not prevent me from going home.

"You know the doctor you are to see back home right?" My grandma spoke again.

"Yes, Dr. Richards." I nodded with his business card still in my hand.

"And you need to go to the pharmacy and get your medicine when you get home, probably tomorrow because they close early."

"Oh yeah, I almost forgot," I lied to make her feel more helpful. "I'll try and make it after the game though."

"Oh Luke is going to be so excited, have you told him yet?"

"No, I want to surprise him at his last baseball game."

I was nervous to see Luke again, he was fully immersed back in his school and social life. I felt like I would mess everything up again when I came back.

"He is just going to love that," She said in a grandma voice.

I smiled at the cute gesture I had in mind, but I didn't know how this would turn out. My family also decided that I would leave most of my stuff here for when I come to visit, which would hopefully be more often. It was less for me to lug around the airport so I was completely fine with it.

"Are you all ready to go?" She asked as I zipped my bag.

I nodded, "Yes I am."

She and my grandfather drove me to the airport, I was on crutches so all I had was a backpack full of stuff I decided to bring home. It was early in the morning, and unbelievably earlier back home so I did not have to worry about Luke trying to call me and ruin the surprise.

'Just got to the airport' I texted his mom.

'send me your flight info, so excited to pick you up!!' She replied

I smiled sending her my flight info, it was reassuring to know that asking for a ride was not inconveniencing her. Afterwards, I crutched my way to my gate which was boarding in a little over an hour.

"What a poor thing," I heard one woman whisper.

I thought I was doing a good job with my crutches, they hurt like hell under my arms but I was assuming it was due to the extra weight my backpack provided. Once I boarded the plane one of the flight attendants followed me to my seat,

"Can I help you put your backpack into the compartment sweetheart?"

"Oh yes please," I smiled while I balanced on one foot.

Once she was done I thanked her and slid into my chair adjusting my crutches to make them fit under my seat. The plane was not full and I had an entire row to myself, and thankfully this flight did not have any layovers so I had all the room in the world for the entire time.  I started to become anxious once the plane began to move, I had put a rubberband on my wrist a week ago to counteract the anxiety but all it was doing was making my arm turn red.

'I gotta find a different outlet' I thought taking a mental note.

I slept for most of the flight, I was wearing Luke's jacket which I'm positive made me extra comfortable.  I had no clue if Luke had tried to contact me yet, he would be getting ready for his game right about now. Soon I would be back with his mom, and sister, driving to watch him play in said game. As the plane was landing I pulled my crutches out and adjusted them to the height that I needed.
