CHAPTER 406: [Bonus chapter] emotional damage
Sometimes, family matters were a complicated subject.
It wasn't that easy. Silas might be a troublemaker, but Dominic had to be lenient with him because of many reasons. The Zhu family might appear too restrictive and intimidating just because they were a powerhouse, but at the same time, no matter how ruthless they were, they extended their patience toward family members.
As someone from the underground and treating the organization as a family, Hera could understand this circumstance more than anyone. After all, one person betrayed her once. That person was also an underboss, having the same rank as Bear and receiving direct orders from the boss.
Many underbosses, including Bear, warned Hera about this particular person, but Hera didn't listen. It was not that she couldn't see the red signs, but because she was hopeful that the person would change his ways before it was too late.
"What?" Dominic raised his brows as his wife was quiet while staring at him, caressing his cheek with her thumb. "You've been looking at me like that as if you want to say something."
'I have a lot of things to say, my love, but I'd rather keep that to myself,'she answered inwardly while a smile turned up on her face. 'I learned my lesson the hard way back then, and I'm afraid because of this thing called family, you will be in danger. But then again, all I need to do is get rid of that guy if he gives me the slightest reason to. So, it's not really an issue.'
"Dom," she called with a smile. "That girl... do you remember what she looks like?"
"Huh?"
"That girl," she stressed, watching him ponder for a moment before he nodded.
"You mean that first friend I had?"
"Yes."
"Well, I vaguely remember what she looks like. But I do remember how her pigtails bounce with her every step and how extravagant her dress was, as if she was a princess."
Her face brightened up. "Is she pretty?"
"..." Dominic studied the bright smile plastered on her face, but then he slid his eyes to the corner.
Was this a trap?
Would his answer cost him his marriage?
Why was she asking such a complicated question that might start an argument?
"Hmm?" Heaven cocked her head to the side, blinking innocently. "Why are you looking away? Don't tell me you don't want to answer?"
Dominic cleared his throat as he stared back at her. "She's pretty."
"Really?"
"Mhm." He nodded but then added just to avoid upsetting her. "But you're prettier."
The smile on her face instantly deadpanned, causing his brows to elevate. Did he say something wrong?
"Between me and that girl, who will you choose?" she blurted out, earning a raise of his brows.
Ever since Heaven and Dominic tried to work on their relationship, what Dominic knew about his wife was that she was not the jealous type. She trusted him enough, and he never gave her reason to be jealous. However, she was particularly bothered by this girl in his past. Therefore, Dominic didn't want to upset her.
But why did it seem like trying not to make her upset had the opposite effect?
No, why was she even asking such random questions? Questions he never thought he would hear from her because his wife wasn't the type.
