you were almost done with your math class,
just a few more minutes. your teacher's voice had faded into the background. he was leaving the class with some concluding notes, or something he called, "food for thought."
your attention had shifted elsewhere though, too tired to listen to him rant about some irrelevant topic.
"there will be a test next thursday," he suddenly announced, making your attention snap back toward the front, a feeling of dread washing over you.
the thought of sitting in class, trying to hold back your tears as you re-read the math problems over and over again was enough to make your head hurt.
you hated tests.
"make sure to study before then," the teacher added, your nerves worsening.
you glanced over at osamu, a look of concern flashing across his face.
were you both screwed?
you thought about the test most of the day. your grade in that class wasn't the prettiest, and if you failed this test you weren't sure you'd be able to get it back up.
osamu seemed to be much less worried than you, but he was a whole letter grade above you so that went without saying.
atsumu offered to help you study and of course, you agreed, though focusing proved to be harder than you had expected. with your grade on the line, you thought it would be easy to find the motivation to study.
you thought wrong.
the numbers and letters on your page were mixing into an unintelligible mess. you just couldn't make sense of them.
atsumu watched you thoughtfully. you were hovering over the desk, your hands on either side of your head, fingers tangled in your hair.
"you're so tense y/n, relax a little," he suggested.
you glanced over at him, frustration lacing your words. "how can i relax? i'm going to fail."
atsumu leaned back slightly, his playful smile persistent. "no, you're not."
"i don't even know if these notes mean anything to me," you gestured to the notebook beside you. the lines were filled with your rushed writing and a few illustrations that you hoped would help you understand equations better.
atsumu nodded, his eyes running over your notes, "do you understand your notes?"
you turned toward the notebook. as you scanned the lined paper your frustration intensified. what the hell was all this?
you bit down on your chapped and sore lips. they were bruised from your anxiety induced skin peeling.
"no," you muttered. "no, i have no idea what they mean."
you ran a tired hand over your face, letting out a groan. "i can't study. i can't pass this dumb test."
"stop it," atsumu urged. "c'mon, y/n. we've done this before."
his attempt at reassurance only worked to irritate you. you held your tongue though, because as annoyed as you were, you realized atsumu was only here to help.
"one step at a time, don't overwhelm yourself."
you took in a deep breath before pulling your hands away, "okay.."
the night drew on. atsumu helped you make sense of your notes, re-writing them in a way that made sense.
osamu had even joined you two, easing your previous tension. atsumu gladly helped his brother as well, but he eventually retreated to his room after a while, claiming that he was too tired.
