you kept pushing kita to tell you what he meant, but every time you did he would just laugh and shake his head. it was like watching you struggle was somehow funny to him.
eventually, you decided to make a mental note to ask him about it again later. you were too focused on the game to keep pressing him. inarizaki and and itachiyama were five sets in and sakusa had been benched for a wrist related problem.
now was probably the best chance inarizaki had.
it was 14–14. inarizaki needed a two point lead to win.
the team was tired, their chests heaving and their skin sticky with sweat. suna tried tooling off the other team, but the ball fell back on your guys's side.
the score was 14-15 now.
atsumu scowled, slowly rolling the ball back onto the other side. he didn't know what to do. he looked around the court, trying to gauge who would be his best option, but everyone was tired.
he was shuffling back to his spot when osamu nudged him gently. "hey."
atsumu turned to him, his brows still furrowed. "what?"
"set me."
atsumu glanced around him, still weighing his options. then he looked at the opposing team. their best blocker and hitter was out, and their libero was worn out. so after a moment he nodded. "okay. go line."
osamu scoffed. "give me a good set and i will."
atsumu rolled his eyes as he gave his brother a playful push. "i always do."
the referee whistle cut through their teasing. the serve hit the tape, the ball falling just behind the ten foot line. for a moment, everyone just watched. the world was going in slow-motion, but no one could move.
until finally, akagi lunged forward, his hand stretched across the floor. the ball barely bounced off his hand, but it was enough. or at least everyone hoped it was.
"up!" akagi desperately shouted, the sound pulling everyone out of their daze.
atsumu shot the ball across the court, osamu meeting it there. then, with a deafening slap, the ball hit the floor on the other side.
15-15.
the team all shouted, pushing osamu and hyping him up. after a second they all turned to akagi and atsumu to compliment their save. atsumu grinned, insisting it was was all akagi.
but atsumu glanced at you after a moment—like he was looking for something. you weren't sure what, so you simply smiled and mouthed the words 'good job'. atsumu grinned, his gaze lingering for just a second longer before his attention was back on the game.

an excruciatingly long rally later and the score 16-15. inarizaki needed one more point. coach kurosu was on the bench next to you, grumbling to himself— something about the boys giving him an aneurysm.
everyone was beyond tired. atsumu was, again, looking around, trying to decide who to set next. then the ball came back over. akagi got it up, but atsumu still wasn't sure who to set. the ball was only inches away from his fingers, then he had it.
