<3"is something up?" you asked atsumu who was currently sat across from you on the floor, leaning against the couch.
he didn't bother looking up his phone, only offering a dismissive shake of his head, "what would be 'up', y/n?"
you guys followed your usual routine after his practice today. you guys walked home and made small talk, you and osamu talking about your shared classes while atsumu talked about his, but you couldn't shake the feeling that maybe you did something wrong or that something was off.
"i don't know," you replied, your voice laced with hesitation.
finally, atsumu glanced up from his phone, briefly scanning your work before a small smirk spread across his lips, "you carried that wrong."
you sighed, somewhat annoyed by how unbothered he was acting right now. you had to bite back a retort, but atsumu's change in demeanor was starting to throw you off.
before you could even fix your error, atsumu was back to scrolling on his phone, only fueling your suspicions. it was unlike him to be so quiet, especially during your tutoring sessions.
"is this about kita?" you blurted the words out, unable to ignore the growing unease in your stomach.
atsumu's laugh filled the room, but it almost sounded strained, "what are you talking about?"
you tensed as he met your gaze, "you're just being really quiet."
atsumu paused for a short moment before letting out a small huff, "aren't you always telling me to be quiet?"
frustration was starting to bubble in your chest as you tried to make sense of atsumu's unusually snippy responses, "you know i don't mean it," you mumbled.
"no?" he teased, but he knew damn well you never meant it.
"you know that." you sighed, "so is it?"
the corner of his lips curled into a smile, "no, it's not about kita. nothing is 'up'."
you still didn't buy it though. you couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to his silence than he was letting on. you scowled as you spoke, "i'll feel bad if i say yes."
atsumu bit the inside of his cheek before answering, "it's not a big deal. i'm just your tutor, right?"
you hesitated, a wave of heat flaring through your stomach, then to your face. why did that question make you feel so icky? was he doing that on purpose?
"are you just my tutor?"
the room fell silent after your question. atsumu seemed to stiffen ever so slightly, his brows coming together in surprise. the silence only lasted a few seconds, but it felt like minutes. you wondered what he was thinking or felt. you hoped his response might give you some idea, but it didn't.
atsumu cleared his throat, pointing to your paper, "you still haven't fixed this, by the way."
you narrowed your eyes at his ambiguous response – if you could even call that a response. it really wasn't.
you didn't pry though, you spent the rest of your session working with him, your usual teasing and banter kept to a minimum, which you hated.
"if i decide to go," you said slowly, "you should come."
you were just finishing up some equations, about to call it a night since you did not feel like studying tonight. it was only 7 but you were ready to pass out.
atsumu raised a brow at the suggestion, "me? why would i go?"
"because it would be nice," you shrugged as you put your stuff away. you didn't see it, but a small smile was playing on atsumu's lips.
