since osamu had left, you were left to talk alone. you huffed, shoving your hands in your pockets as you started down the sidewalk. for a moment, you thought you'd finally been given a minute to breathe, then you heard someone behind you.

"hey, no osamu or atsumu today?"

you spun around, your heart jumping at the sound of kita's voice. you'd instantly recognized it was him before you'd turned around, that didn't make it any less startling though.

"oh, yeah. they both had things," you shrugged. then you eyed him carefully. "don't you go to study groups after practice?"

kita nodded, slowly stepping towards you. "yeah, but no one was really there." he raked his eyes over you before adding, "you walking home?"

you nodded, the gesture making kita frown.

"i should walk you."

you nervously laughed off the suggestion. it was sweet, but you were positive having kita walk you home after your conversation with atsumu would only make you feel a thousand times worse.

"no, it's okay-"

"it's no problem," kita insisted, already starting down the pavement and glancing back at you as if he was expecting you to follow.

you gave in with a small breath, trailing after him, then falling into step beside him. "thank you," you murmured, flashing him a quick smile.

kita returned the gesture, though his smile was a little softer. after a beat of silence he started again, "you look tired."

you frowned at that. no girl ever wanted to be told she looked tired.

"i guess i am," you answered, shrugging again. truthfully, you just wanted to go home, lay in bed, and mull over everything going on between you and atsumu. "i have a lot on my mind is all."

kita nodded. he was quiet, like he was unsure of whether he should say anything, but after a second he spoke up, "want to talk about it?"

you met his gaze, your expression softening. you wished you could talk about it, but how would that even go?

'so your teammate, that i, unfortunately, have a big, embarrassing crush on, is driving me crazy and we haven't spoken to each other normally in weeks.'

yeah, no thanks.

so you just shook your head instead. "it's nothing crazy. just school stuff, assistant manager stuff.." you hesitated before saying the last part, "relationship stuff."

kita hummed in understanding at first, but then he was raising a curious brow. "relationship stuff?"

you nodded slowly, your chest tightening. just thinking about atsumu made your stomach twist in knots. you couldn't get the image of his face out of your head.

he looked at you so accusingly.. so hurt. you weren't used to that look. especially not when you were the cause of it.

kita sensed the shift in your tone, saw the way your shoulders tightened and your eyes glazed over, so he cleared his throat before changing the topic. "well, how do you like being assistant manager?" it was nonsense small talk, but it was better than watching you curl in on yourself.

you glanced up at kita again, grateful for the shift in attention. "it's fun. honestly, i think i was guilted into doing it," you huffed.

kita pulled a face at you. "guilted? i thought you were looking forward to it."

"i mean, i was! i am," you defended, pushing your hands further into your pockets. "but coach kurosu made me feel like i had to!"

"how so?"
