(Memoir #2 • Maria Pseftoga, May Roosevelt)

The whole room went into a deafening silence.
Hyunjin looked to his right side, and then to his left.

The fact that all these people would have to die if he'd want to win made him sick, but the fact that he'd have to kill a bunch of them made him want to throw up right on the spot.

I can't do this. Hyunjin thought. He slowly moved his hand to his stomach, somehow thinking it would ease the worsening nausea that was formed in there.
I'm going to throw up. I'm going to give up. I can't do this.

No.

Do this for Felix!

No matter what, I have to see him again...

"Any more questions?" Donna asked. The entire room answered with a painful silence. Hyunjin could hear a few sobs and sniffles and he wanted to do nothing else than cry too.

"Well then." Donna said. "Let the games begin!" She spread her arm and showed everyone a beaming but maniac smile. "In two minutes."

Without even waiting for a reaction Donna was already taken down again. The platform she was standing on was slowly disappearing under the ground while it was taking the woman with it.

Hyunjin jumped on his feet. Along with every other contestant he started yelling at the woman to come back. Without remembering when it had started he felt tears rolling down his cheeks, just to disappear inside the fabric of his mask.

Hyunjin tried to walk forwards but was once again stopped by a weird force that he couldn't see, holding him and the other contestants at least 25 meters apart from the playground.

Hyunjin stopped trying to fight the weird force as he noticed something appearing in the air. He took a step back.

It was a hologram of a clock.
Counting down from 2 minutes.

In the bags are necessities for survival, that Donna woman made that clear. Hyunjin thought. But she also said there aren't enough bags for everyone.

Hyunjin looked at the pile of seemingly perfect and same-sized bags, and tried to count them. They were piled up though, which made the task a lot harder.

He stopped somewhere at the count of 75. He sighed. He could tell by the posture of the other contestants that he was one of the better built ones, but he felt horrible. If he'd grab a bag then he'd take someone else's chance of survival away. But if he didn't his death would be guaranteed.

He took a shaky breath. He looked up at the clock-hologram, and his heart stopped.

35 seconds left.

Would people kill each other to get their hands on one of those bags? Hyunjin thought. He came to the conclusion that people would.

If it would be to save their own arses then there would be a great chance someone would do something other deem unacceptable.

"Twenty, nineteen, eighteen-" A robotic female voice said. Hyunjin's heart stopped. He moved closer to the unknown force that had been holding him back, hoping that he would be the first to reach the bags and the first to disappear.

He heard commotion around him, and couldn't help but to look at what was causing the sound. His breath was caught stuck in his throat yet again as he saw the seemingly perfect walls slide open, revealing at least a few hundred white halls, corridors and passageways.

"Ten, nine, eight, seven-" The female voice picked up in volume.

Hyunjin took a shaky breath as he resided himself to run.
He buried his left forefoot deep inside the plastic grass so he could have a good start. It was almost as if getting ready for a marathon.
