"You know what sucks?" Someone said, picking up a drink and sighing. "I don't even know my name."
"Judging from how you're dressed, I bet you were from Caligo," the bartender pointed at his maroon suit and golden decor. "Not like I care if some big wig from the fairy-infested place comes here; none of us know who we are, so who cares what class we were in?"
"I guess I'm stuck here until I can figure out who I am and how I died."
"Good luck, most of us don't know either. Except for her," he pointed to a woman who was draped over the table. "Missy over there died drinking herself 'til she was cold. The thing is, she came here without anyone knowing her name. She was too drunk to remember and now she's stuck here too."
"That's just great." The man took a sip of the wine and it passed through his transparent body. "What's with dying and losing your memories?"
"Only happens when you've got unfinished business. Those who were satisfied in life get to go right to the afterlife while we're stuck here in the living world where no one can see us. Except for small kids."
The man got up and went to his room; he kicked a chair and watched his leg go through it, he was frustrated. Ever since he got on the ship, his memories were blank and he had to deal with the captain who treated the crew terribly. A green mist surrounded the ship as it sailed closer to another ship, cannons fired to sink the target and an echoing siren was heard when metal crashed into the water. A knock on the door got the man's attention and he went to the deck, the crew was to gather what they could from the wreckage and pick up stragglers, alive or dead. He jumped onto the ruins and picked up a book that he recognized; it was old with some images and text that he read aloud.
A blast came from his hand and shocked the others, he had no idea he was a mage or that what he found was a book of spells. The captain ordered him to the quarters and he sat with the book in front of him; the captain flipped through the pages and discovered a name on it: Zemlupus. He shook his head when he heard that name, it wasn't his. Then there was something that came back to him, a memory of him pestering a young mage who was writing in the book. The captain wanted to know more, Zemlupus was the name of a powerful overlord in Caligo, if he was friends with such a person, it'd change the game for the pirates. The man shook his head again, he didn't know his relationship to Zemlupus.
The captain shooed him away to continue his search and kept the book. Whoever the man was, he had some importance to the overlords. He was found at Xiatian's barrier that kept ghosts from passing through and was wearing charms only found in Caligo's upper class.
"Is everyone okay?" Nemo asked on the comms.
"Somewhat!" Carmen yelled out.
"This isn't Xiatian," Laurine saw that they were underwater and in an air bubble generated by a stone in the ruins they landed in.
"Everyone," Nemo turned the ship's lights back on. "Welcome to the Labyrinth of the Unwavering Sea."
Akko opened a book about the labyrinth as the others surrounded him, "I believe this is it. We're in the fourth layer, where those alive can meet with the dead."
"What does it mean to meet with the dead?" Carmen asked.
"I don't know, souls are supposed to move to the afterlife when their body dies unless they have unfinished business. That's when they become vengeful spirits, or loiters if you're lucky."
Another ship crashed into the fourth layer and Laurine seemed to recognize it, she pushed her way to the exit and went to it to see who was there. The captain climbed out, saw her, and had an expression on his face that was a mixture of shocked and scared.
