"Why do you want to join Chaldea?" A man sat at his desk as he pushed some of his silver hair behind his ear and read the application.
"I want to help make things better, I might not be much... but I want to try." Carmen explained, "I can use computers and I can learn anything if you give me time."
"You say that your last name is Annuska, that is a mage family, would you like to be part of the master team?"
Carmen hesitated before replying. "No, being compared to mages is the last thing I want. If you can keep it secret, then I would appreciate that."
"If you say so," he shuffled the papers in his hands before placing them on the table.
"Thank you."
She left the office, feeling the pressure in her chest. She was so scared. She checked her phone for the time and noticed it was evening, she had to head home to get dressed, it was another long night ahead of her. She was going to sing at her father's casino and then speak with him about the new job if she got accepted. She had jumped on the first opportunity to join Chaldea, hoping to get away from the stress of Japan and her family. No more bullying from her brothers about not being a real mage, no more yelling from her father, and no more classmates making fun of her inability to use magic. Just a bunch of people working to help the world with a few mages included.
Mitra lifted rubble from an old building; nothing was there either. It felt like they were searching for years thanks to the scorching sun hitting them. Helena held the list and checked off another town, there weren't many left. She dusted off her shoes, she hated the desert, it was hot, dry, and dusty, and sand was everywhere. Unlike the other realms, there was nothing outside the capital. Russia had a few settlements, Rome had the farmlands, and China also had villages. India was barren, and it was most likely due to the storm that wiped out anything it touched. Sita said that it appeared not long after the demon war when most of the gods died.
Varuna, the god of water, and Vayu, the god of wind, were the ones who kept the towns safe until Vayu died, leaving the god of water alone in the effort to protect the people. And since Varuna was also in charge of the storm wall that separated India from the endless sea, he had to reserve his strength, so only protected the capital. With that, people were forced into the five rings or found other ways to avoid the storm. Vrishasena hid his base between two large rock formations where it was both safe from the storm and the capital's eye while Sita had her base underground.
The air felt less dry as some water drops hit the ground, forming into a large sphere just above the team and then dispersed to show the man with blue hair was in the center, or rather, he was the water and took a human form for them. He held a trident in his right hand as he glared at them, then he saw Mitra and his expression changed. He descended and looked at Mitra, the two knew each other.
"Why are you here?" He asked.
"I can ask you the same thing," Mitra responded. "We're here on a mission, what are you doing?"
"Always with that brash tone, I'm here because I'm requesting you to come with me to the capital."
"Are you kidding me?!" Yu pointed the anti-divine dagger at him. "Do you know what this is? It's a big screw you to gods!"
"I am aware, you hurt Yama with that blade and now she's out of the count." He slammed his trident on the ground, creating a cyclone above them. "Come at me, Chaldea."
"Mitra?" Carmen noticed the caster's hesitation. "Are you okay?"
Mitra shook it off, "I'm fine, I'm fine..."
Despite the only attacks being water-based, the group found it hard to avoid them. Pillars came from the sky and crashed onto the sand, turning it into mud and splashing it in the faces of the group. Nero had to rub her eyes when she got hit and Yu grabbed her when she was about to be hit again. Vrishasena was with Helena, the caster enhancing his lance with ice magic to freeze the water to stop it. She formed a ball of wind in her hands that cut through the the god of water's attacks and hit him. His motions stopped as he landed on the ground, Yu going to stab him with the anti-divine dagger. However, Mitra caught her hand before the blade hit him.
