Left Behind

There were many reasons why I stayed and followed you,
To overcome my limitations and grow, it's true.
You were my goal, the one I aspired to be,
Standing with you on the finish line, I longed to see.

A mocking laugh escaped my lips, filled with doubt,
"This is ridiculous," I exclaimed, my voice loud.
As I pondered and lamented, lost in my thoughts,
I yearned to grow, run, and be with you, in all sorts.

But foolishly, I watched you drift further away,
Unable to bridge the gap, no matter what I'd say.
We once stood together, side by side,
Now I'm left behind, watching you stride.

You're still nearby, that much is clear,
Yet the gap has widened, making you disappear.
Perhaps I grew complacent, too at ease,
Or you ran at a pace I failed to seize.

But now it's too late, the chance has slipped away,
The separation too vast, no words left to say.
