Rohaan

"Waise, Rehan. What side will you be representing?" Mama had been continuously teasing Papa. "Bride or groom?"

I smiled as I worked on my laptop in the living room.

"Why don't you answer that question, Mrs Rehan? I know that your dewar is like your little brother and Yamna is close to your heart." Papa raised his eyebrows at her.

Mama smiled. "Touché. I'll give you this one."

"Whose side am I from?" I joked. "After all, the other side is my Chachu."

"Tenu akal aagayi ai, aina'i kaafi ay." Papa laughed.

*"You came into your senses, that's enough."

Mama also laughed, lovingly ruffling my hair. She then looked fondly at me. "How happy are you? Ma Sha Allah! Your ladli will be coming here, In Sha Allah."

Papa grinned. "My Yas' girl. I cannot express my happiness. I still sometimes think of Yas as the little kid who relied so much on me." He lightly slapped the back of my head. "Shukar hai, you did something right."

I smiled as Mama laughed again.

As I was walking to my car from my work the next day, I got ambushed...by monkeys.

Also known as my closest friends.

"Assan teri gal karni, gal karni ay Daddy naal...Assan teri gal karni!" They started singing while doing the bhangra. "Akhiyan de vich ni gulaabi tere dornay, ni chaiti kar aaja baday changay tere sauray ne.

There was Ahmed Mohsin, of course. Then there was Ramandeep Singh, a.k.a. Raman, Abbas Shakir and of course, my cousin Shayaan Saim. Raman and I had been friends since Primary School, while I had known Abbas since Secondary School. We weren't close before, but he walked as an assistant for one of the lawyers that I regularly came across at the police station, so now we are close friends again.

"Mithai te khila, mundeya!" Raman grinned.

*"Give us some mithai (traditional fried sweets), boy!"
